fm transmitters

so I need a way to hook stuff up to my car. I went & got one of those fm transmitters today, though, plugged it in, and it sucks. a lot. it's barely audible, filled with static in most positions, and is occupying a perfectly good cigarette lighter. I just have a factory, built-in system in my car with no line in, so I don't know how feasible a hardwired connection would even be. has anyone ever managed an acceptable setup with one of these transmitter deals (and not one made for an ipod)? if so, which one(s) and how?

I use a $30 FM transmitter from Frys Electronics. I can't remember the name of the brand off the top of my head(Sytek?). My tips:
-Get a transmitter that will let your set any FM freq (not that ones with only 4 options)
-I find the best reception on the 88-91 range, although when I head off into the mountains, the high end is better.
-Turn up your audio source to the max
-Try not to get a transmitter where the wire is coiled, it will bounce around and cause distortions. Also, try and find one with a short wire, for the same reason.

I used to have the Belkin Griffins. They are both great, just as long as you 1) have rechargeable batteries 2)don't mind driving off a cliff in an attempt to switch out the batteries..

My Belkin was decent. I still heard alot of static but it worked most of the time.

I have a really old one (Arkon Soundfeeder SF120) that I got from a friend's garage sale. The dial (it's analog) actually covers the entire FM spectrum unlike the more modern ones, and the label on the back says that it's still patent pending.

It works pretty well, but it's a huge chunky box that takes a single AA battery. While the sound quality isn't great, it's about what you'd expect over the radio. It sometimes cuts or picks up some interference when passing semis.

It would be useful if it would amplify the signal, though. I have to set the output of my mp3 player to almost full volume, and then turn the volume in the car up. Apart from that, I'd say it's pretty useful to have around, despite the shortcomings.

One of my friends decided to try to take out his in-car tape player to see if he could directly wire a line-in. I'm not sure how that turned out, but he had to trick it to think that there was a tape inside. I've used a 3.5mm to tape converter that came with a CD player, too.

has anybody tried adding a signal booster or headphone amp to the line, and with what sort of results?
