I travel a lot for work. Currently, I'm in Germany drinking every beer they make. If I had a choice, I would rather eat with other people because I enjoy conversations and listening to other's life experiences. Sometimes, usually the weekends, I eat alone. The main problem I have with eating alone is boredom. There is only so much observing and taking in my surroundings I can do without being, what I think is, rude. Usually I bring a book or customize my Crackberry - something to focus my mind onto.

I'll admit I feel a little self-conscious when I eat alone at high-quality restaurants. It's easy to say "Who cares?" when it's a pizzeria or a burger shack, but when it is a white table cloth, dim-light, $30+ entree place, yes I feel a little awkward. But I do it anyway because my love of food trumps any awkwardness. Also, being at extremely busy places, I feel bad for leaving an unused seat when other people are waiting but it.

I used to think it was ankward, but now I just don't care. I love food and I'm not much for talking while eating. I can talk afterwards, but during I like to just eat and enjoy. :D

eating is definitely a social experience.

i always kind of chuckle at the fatties i see eating by themselves at the casino buffets. then i get pissed cause they're so fat and i'm like, "PUT THE FORK DOWN FATTY"

i enjoy eating alone and staring at the people who watch me. checking out their girlfriends and licking my lips at them :toothless

to be honest I share the feeling that it can be annoying at times. I also travel a lot for work and it just feels weird to go into a restaurant and occupy a table by yourself. going to restaurants is mostly a social experience and I have the feeling that other dinner guests don't really understand why you would go there alone.

maybe that's more of a European culture thing, it highly depends on the country you are in as well. for instance Dutch people are the kings of stare. they will give penetrating looks and judge the people around them into the tiniest details. this is also the reason why in Amsterdam all restaurants and pubs have their seats and tables facing the street, so the guests can check out people passing by while eating.. lol.

I usually try to pick a spot that gives me an overview, I don't mind facing ppl its just boring if u have nothing else to do than eat and nobody to talk to. at least watching ppl or checking out girls can be worthwhile hehe

so it's true. if you're not dutch, you're not much. :clown:

They weren't starting at you, mainly because eating alone is a perfectly normal behavior. Seems like you've got some MAJOR insecurities. Good luck with that.
