Why is it that... (pg. 3)

I have quite a few OCD tendencies. My girlfriend and I had a discussion about this the other day actually; I'd mentioned that I used to do a lot of weird stuff when I was a kid and that I rarely exhibited any tendencies now, but for the rest of the day following that conversation I noticed just how many subtle things I did.

Kinda weird.

Yeah I have some odd things I do. Like I have to have my bills (as in currency) arranged from smallest to largest, they all must be straight and no folded corners, the numbers must all be aligned in the same direction, etc. Or when I am arranging something in some sort of order, I am super anal about it being perfect. Things like that which are quite common.

or

"Why is it that people say it's raining cats and dogs when it's actually raining water?"

You're being overly literal and it's a ing stupid question.

Umm no. The fact that I was curious in the rationale of immediately assuming one thing when that assumption couldn't be further from the truth, makes it obvious it isn't like asking a stupid captain obvious question.

Likewise with the bills.

The two that I've noticed for a long time are what my dad and I both do; whenever we close the fridge we push on both the top freezer and bottom fridge handles simultaneously with one hand at least three times to "make sure it's closed." Whenever we use a faucet, we push hard (again at least three times) to make sure that it's off. About a year ago we had to have the kitchen faucet fixed because he and I ended up causing it to leak after doing it for so long.

When I was a kid I did this really weird thing with my hands. If I'd be walking along and brush my hand against something, I then had to stop and make sure that every side of both hands touched it at least once. I only do that about once every couple of months now.

I'm not a clean freak, no. , if I took a picture of my room right now I'm pretty sure that most people would be appalled. However, when I do clean my room or put dishes away, everything has to be absolutely, spot-on symmetrical.

I'll stop with this odd one; whenever I sit down on the toilet, I sit down four times before doing my business. :o

Couldn't be further from the truth? The assumption is pretty close.

You even admitted yourself that one of the most common symptoms of OCD is excessive cleanliness, so it follows that people with little knowledege and/or experience with the condition might automatically assume that this is the ONLY symptom and use the term "OCD" as a synonym for excessive cleanliness.

It's a dumb question.

I did say that, but I also know that the general populace, at least in my own experience, knows that excessive cleanliness is not the only thing exhibited by people manifesting OCD behaviors.

And whether you think it is a dumb question matters not anyways, as that was not the interest of this thread.

Bingo. Unless those little "neuroses" impact your daily life, you don't have OCD. That 's hard to work out even through serious behavior modification therapy. Once you conquer something, the obsessions and compulsions usually just take form in a new behavior... it's like a neverending cycle.

My ex girlfriend's dad had OCD... some of his problems are as follows: he used to have to put exactly 84 strokes of deoderant under each arm in the morning before work.... 1 stroke going from elbow to hip. If he lost count, he'd have to start over. He also had to repeatedly call Washington DC to get his watch set exactly on cue with the atomic clock... if the second hand jumped a little when he pushed it in, he'd have to keep calling back till he got it right, sometimes until 5 in the morning. He also had every single second planned out for the course of a week long family vacation, and if it deviated in the slightest, he'd turn into a nervous wreck until he got it back on track. I could go on about the way he methodically wrapped rubber bands around rolled up cash, but you get the point by now...lol.

How do people with OCD get hitched?

Must have enormously patient partners!

actually I think the most common type is the checkers/counters. The ones that check to see if they locked the door 30 times before leaving. Or the ones that have to count all of the corners in a room before they leave.

the problem is that they don't think they performed the process correctly, so they start over.

oh and there was one girl in college that would wash her hands every few minutes, she would wash the skin off her hands.

i wouldn't call it ocd,, but i have to rinse my hands off everytime i finish chopping each vegetable or meats on the cutting board. i will also rinse the cutting board each time i finish chopping. i also have to rinse off whatever i just chopped (unless it's garlic, pepper or onions).

i also have to rinse off the spatula, knife, kitchen tongs or whatever culinary tool i use while cooking.

I used to have that as a kid. At some point if I left the house and locked the front door, I could spend up to five minutes just toying with the door to make sure it was locked, and then when I finally managed to leave, I had to fight with myself to not come back and check again.

I think this is because the underlying premise of OCD is "things needing to be a certain way" - for anything tangible this usually means in some sort of specific order (i.e. tidy or arranged)

My mother is completely OCD clean-freak nazi house gestapo. I love her to death and she's my best friend but sometimes I think it is a growing plague in our relationship. I think that when certain tangible and irregular compulsions start to affect the way you feel about others... well you're pretty ed and need to stop being such a thunder c.u.n.t.

on a happier and super-er note...
