John Digweed's Going Digital

As a performing DJ, John Digweed is known for having stayed with tried-and-tested vinyl and CDs when playing live – in stark contrast to his long-time collaborative partner Sasha, who was an early champion of custom DJ controllers and laptop-based DJ sets. But after years of waiting for the technology to be sufficiently mature, Digweed says he’s now ready to make the plunge into a laptop-based setup. “I’m probably going to be switching to Native Instruments’ Traktor Scratch,” he confides. “I’ve got the guys from NI coming down next week to run me through it and make sure I’ve got it right.” Asked about his decision to go with Traktor over the many competing software packages, Digweed reveals he’s done his homework. “I looked around, and I asked around, got the feel from everyone I could, and there were a lot of people using Traktor - Carl Cox, Nic Fanciulli, Deep Dish, even Richie Hawtin – that told me how much they enjoy using it. These are colleagues I’ve known for many years, and they were all recommending it.”

Don't know how it's going to turn out, but should be interesting! :D

I really don't understand why he says he has to bring people from Native Instruments down to explain the setup to him. :stongue:

Switching isn't a surprise but i thought he would go with ableton.

Probably because he can. Why bother looking through the tutorials or going through trial and error when the people themselves are willing to walk you through it?

Anyway, so I suppose Transitions v. 4 was just his trial test with digital mixing?

Maybe he's just afraid of laptops :p

don't blame him... we'll see if he sticks to traktor. i would have thought ableton or something along those lines as well.

I guess he's just going to ditch his book of CDs for a laptop and CDJs.

It's incredibly simple to setup stuff like Serato or Traktor. Incredibly. Hell, its website touts "'Instant Connect' plug and play usability."

Yeah but he may be using additional/exclusive hardware. Don't be so quick to presume...

There's little quirks to Traktor that would be great to have someone explain rather than read. And again, I'm sure there are people at Native that WANT to go and help him out.

Meh.
