I may have an opportunity to DJ our company's holiday party this year, and was just wondering if other here had any experience doing this sort of thing, and if you have any advice/thoughts on it.
"Dancing" was mentioned, but I know not to come out slamming electro house or hardstyle all night. I'm thinking, maybe play a chillout/ambient set throughout dinner and the beginning of the night, and then work into some jazzy deep house for those wanting to shuffle their feet.
Thoughts? |

I'm thinking Top 40's.. Having said that depends on the age of your crowd. But you'll know your colleagues well enough to judge what they might like.
I dunno if i'd go near House other than a song or 3 over the whole night.
Just my 2c |

i used to do mobile gigs all the time, weddings and corporate stuff
top 40 all the way, i'd only drop 2 or 3 housy tracks all night, the most commercial of the commercial stuff
i used multimusic for my music service http://www.multimusic.ca/
also check out promo only http://www.promoonly.com/ |

Top 40 would actually be a bad idea for this crowd I think. We're talking a mix of older people with middle-aged people wanting to dance a bit. Not really a "Rihanna" crowd... they will want more of a background/soundscape for dinner and such, and then to have me try to coax people out with some dancier music.
I'm thinking, not any harder than this at its peak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7n9gDylE6E |

As i said mate, you will know the crowd a lot better than we do.
I just know that my parents + anyone near their 40's (no offense to anyone older on here) they're not too clued in with ambient music.
I dunno it's just me, but sure why not have some top 40 stuff lined up alongside your own music and mix and match see which one goes down better. |

Yeah, I just thought ambient/chillout music would be good "background" to them during dinner and such, and then move on to loungey music such as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3jPVuGWygI, and then if all goes well and people are wanting to move around once some drinks are in them, move on to some milder deep house.
To me, it seems that top 40 would scare these people more than the kind of stuff I have in mind... lol. I may not be conveying it well, though. |

exactly, top 40 doesn't just mean the current top 40, there's over 40 years of back catalog to play from, and that you should play from |

Hell I DJ at my corporate party 5 years in a row and I usually played top 40 tunes current to 40 years back and went well for me. The age group I have to play for was 21 on up to 58 years of age. May have give this a try because half miners will be drunk of there ass because for 1 week time period they are so lax on random piss screening and all.
But the end month I got DJ for 2 corporate fall fashion shows and all and it will be fun yet again for 2 year and counting. Then I got there spring and summer fashion shows to I do. |
