I just copied it from the appendix of a paper I wrote a couple years ago. :p

graveyard shift. have worked 6 months of shiftwork on it. actually, it might hav ebeen more than 6 months total (one set of 3 months; three sets of 2 months). 11pm-7am.

i liked the midnight shift for a few reasons:

1) when i was done with shift, the sun was coming up (or would be up, depending on the time of year), and i felt awake and it was great to go to the gym and workout
2) on my "nights" off, i could still go out and party
3) it allowed me to take up a few hobbies that i would be too distracted to partake in during the daylight hours.

i didn't like mids for a few reasons:
1) i didn't have a problem sleeping during the day; but i had a problem waking up at 7-8pm and wanting to eat DINNER, not breakfast.
2) if i needed to get things done during the day, it had to be in the morning. after like 11am, i was shot; so i would lose a lot of sleep if i had to do something at say, 2-5pm timeframe
3) social life kinda blew because i wasn't always on the same shift as my friends. so they were always going out when i was working; and vice versa. (that was always a shift-work thing; not just a mid thing).

overall, i like nights for 1-2 months. that third month tho; it was awful. 4 nights on, 2 nights off...for three months really wore on me.

the only consolation i had was the last week of nights was when my MONO set in; so i was away from work.

tips/hints i found helpful for that particular shift:

- keep your food schedule the same. wake up at night and have dinner. don't have coffee/breakfast...save that for when you get off shift.
- keep your work environment light/bright...it helps with staying awake at odd hours of the night.
- if you are like me, you won't have a problem sleeping with the sun up; but if you do, then just put some blankets up over your windows. or tin/aluminum foil.
- drink a lot of water
- on your days off (if you have 1-2 days off) don't go back to a day schedule. keep your night schedule. going back and forth on your days on/days off really s with you. keep a routine/schedule and stick with it. (that was what killed me the last month)

Thank God for MONO.

Welp, in two hours I start my first full week on 3rd. Here goes nothing!

The fact that it's a full week is the important thing here.

I had an awesome job at third shift, but it was only two days out of the week. So I would have a relatively regular sleeping pattern until Thursday, work from 11-7 on Thursday and Friday, then try to return to normalcy on Saturday.

It's hard to live a comfortable life working part-time third shift.

Yeah - last week I worked 7-3 and 11-7 in the same twenty four hour period - it was wretched. :(

At least when I get home tomorrow the lot of you will be getting to work, so you can entertain me while I smoke myself to sleep. :p

One day in and so far so good - so long as it stays busy, I think it's going to be good because time really did seem to cruise by.

Time for a shower then to smoke my face off.

Day two for me is always the worst when I am getting back to third shift (10p-8a). I work rotating - about every 4 weeks I work 100 hours in about 12 days (6 on - 2 off - 4 on - 5 off then back to days)

I am heading to bed after night 4 of training a fresh guy to our group. 2 more to go on this set - and 6 total left until about 2 months of days.
