3rd Shift

Anyone ever worked it?

:conf:

There's a 50/50 chance I'll be assigned to a project tomorrow that will have me on 3rd shift for anywhere from a month to 6, and having never worked that shift on a regular basis I'm just looking for some opinions and thoughts on what it was like.

I'm actually kind of crossing my fingers for it because of the potential bonuses that come along with work on odd hours projects.

Whats a 3rd shift:conf:
Mr.Mystery
I'm guessing that means night shift.

Used to do that nearly 2 years straight. Loved it. Would still do it if I could.

Would be hours like 10p-6a or 12a-8a.

My only concern right now is getting a more definite idea of the terms of the project (they can range anywhere from a month to a decade - though in fairness, I do know this is less than a year).

graveyard shift. have worked 6 months of shiftwork on it. actually, it might hav ebeen more than 6 months total (one set of 3 months; three sets of 2 months). 11pm-7am.

i liked the midnight shift for a few reasons:

1) when i was done with shift, the sun was coming up (or would be up, depending on the time of year), and i felt awake and it was great to go to the gym and workout
2) on my "nights" off, i could still go out and party
3) it allowed me to take up a few hobbies that i would be too distracted to partake in during the daylight hours.

i didn't like mids for a few reasons:
1) i didn't have a problem sleeping during the day; but i had a problem waking up at 7-8pm and wanting to eat DINNER, not breakfast.
2) if i needed to get things done during the day, it had to be in the morning. after like 11am, i was shot; so i would lose a lot of sleep if i had to do something at say, 2-5pm timeframe
3) social life kinda blew because i wasn't always on the same shift as my friends. so they were always going out when i was working; and vice versa. (that was always a shift-work thing; not just a mid thing).

overall, i like nights for 1-2 months. that third month tho; it was awful. 4 nights on, 2 nights off...for three months really wore on me.

the only consolation i had was the last week of nights was when my MONO set in; so i was away from work.

tips/hints i found helpful for that particular shift:

- keep your food schedule the same. wake up at night and have dinner. don't have coffee/breakfast...save that for when you get off shift.
- keep your work environment light/bright...it helps with staying awake at odd hours of the night.
- if you are like me, you won't have a problem sleeping with the sun up; but if you do, then just put some blankets up over your windows. or tin/aluminum foil.
- drink a lot of water
- on your days off (if you have 1-2 days off) don't go back to a day schedule. keep your night schedule. going back and forth on your days on/days off really s with you. keep a routine/schedule and stick with it. (that was what killed me the last month)

God, if only I was doing this in Chicago, talk about a perfect day job for a DJ working weekends. :stongue:

Thanks Billiam, much obliged. Won't find out really anything on it until tomorrow, just trying to make sure that as far as my opinion (whether I want to take it or not), I'm reasonably well informed.

I've only had to do it once, and it was only for a few weeks between transferring from a community college to a proper university. I worked ten hour shifts is a dirty little factory that manufactured prefab furniture: think those easy to assemble cheap ass book shelves you get at Wal-Mart, etc.

I did really well until around 3:00AM every morning, and then I just seemed to take a dive and feel really exhausted regardless of the level of work we were performing that night/morning.

I never did any running around/unwinding when I got off work - it was just straight home, eat, shower, attempt sleep. I didn't get used to (or didn't have time to get used to) the sleeping during the day routine. Yes, I slept, and some days even slept soundly, but I never truly felt rested when I woke up. My body seemed to KNOW it was light out, no matter how dark I got my bedroom.

I honestly felt like I had LESS time when I was on 3rd shift. Everyone around me went on and on about how they felt like they had more time, etc. But I just never felt that way, so it wasn't for me at all.

Now, let qualify that by saying I was emotionally exhausted at the time, too, as I was finishing up the end of a three year relationship with the high-school sweetheart who in the last six months of our relationship decided to go on a meth binge.:gsmile:

It aint so bad. I somehow managed to juggle work, school and some sort of a social life when i realised that two to three hours of sleep per day is enough when coupled with a litre of borderline toxic coffee. For me the most difficult time was between 2am and 5 am. Before and after no problem, but those three hours were torture.

worked it for a long time. if you're a night person (which for the most part i don't believe you are) you won't deviate from your schedule at all.

personally, i liked it at first, then i hated it. i liked having fridays off. i liked driving to work and coming back without having to deal with the average 9-5 worker traffic. i hated having to come in on sunday night, especially if i was partying the night before. social life drags since no one is up at the same times you are..

when i was going to school AND working 3rd shift, i felt consistently.. unhealthy i guess. never felt like i slept enough and i'd try to make up for it between class/work. it sucked. 1st shift is where it's at yo.

though in the end, if i couldn't work 1st shift, i would work 3rd over 2nd.

:wtf:

What leads you to believe that?

Just because I'm not out every weekend until dawn doesn't mean I'm not a night person.

Well yeah, but that had more to do with actually going to class and/or TA'ing than anything else - now that I'm off that schedule, I'm basically ruined again as far as "early to rise."

Before I started working this week I was up until at least 4 every night, and now I'm still finding it hard to get to sleep. I'm running on between 4-5 hours a night right now. :(
