Alexei Cherepanov, the New York Rangers' first pick (No. 17) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, has died after suffering an apparent heart attack Monday during a game with Avangard Omsk, his club in the Kontinental Hockey League.

I cant believe that I read that on NHL.com today. The bright spot for the future of the NY Rangers, gone... unbelievable. This kid, literally a kid, had so much talent, his potential was unreal... what we were seeing from him now was just a scratch on the surface of what he could do. Such a shame.

christ, this seems to be happening quite a bit with sportsmen.
A Rugby league player died in training within the last few days here in the UK and only last season phil o'donnell died during an SPL match.

| What it is though, is that its no secret that in Russia they juice the kids with steroids... and right now this is what a lot of people are thinking. |

This guy had really bright future ahead. After dominating U20 World Championships at the age of 18, some people claimed that he might be 1st overall in the NHL Draft.
Rest in peace. |

I can't believe this.
The guy scored more points in the KHL during his rookie-year than Ovechkin, Malkin or Kovalchuk.
He also beat the rookie record for most goals, formerly held by none other than Pavel Bure.
This is indeed a sad day for hockey. :(
Rest in peace. |

| The ironic thing is... he collided with his teammate, and idol... and former NY Ranger, Jaromir Jagr. |

MOSCOW (AP)—A Russian lawmaker said Tuesday that rising hockey star Alexei Cherepanov, a first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers, may have died due to negligence on the part of paramedics who responded to an emergency call.
Cherepanov, 19, died Monday during a Continental Hockey League game outside of Moscow.
Russian investigators said Cherepanov suffered from chronic ischemia, a medical condition in which not enough blood gets to the heart or other organs.
Pavel Krasheninnikov, who sits on the Russian Hockey Federation’s supervisory council and is a member of the State Duma, said there was no ambulance on duty at the arena where Cherepanov’s Russian team, Avangard Omsk, was playing.
He asserted that emergency workers took too long to respond and didn’t have a defibrillator, a machine used to shock the heart. It was unclear how much time it took paramedics to respond.

Well, theyre in Siberia, how long did they think it would take? There should always be paramedics at a sporting event incase of anything. If a player breaks a bone that penetrates an artery, they guy is dead unless immediately taken to a hospital. Seriously, its negligence in general that there arent EMT's at the sports arena in general. |
