Australia tends to have reciprocal agreements with other countries regarding visas. From what I understand, we have no such agreement with the US, so you would essentially have to find a job where the company would sponsor your visa (ie. You get the visa based on the fact you'll be working for that company).

That said, I think I read that Americans can get a 'working holiday' visa over here now, for a year or something? I'm not totally sure though.

yup. but if you wanted to stay longer than the year, you would either have to be sponsored (normal rules apply...company has to prove that no aussie citizen can do your job better) or work in the outback for 3 months...which isn't always fun
