Well, I'm certainly not claiming to be an authority on this, so I can admit I might be wrong or misguided...

Tell me then, what household salary bracket would be considered upper middle class?

One measure is the median income for a person with an advanced degree (master's or higher), about $80,000 in the U.S. Obviously the buying power of that income will be different depending on where you live, which is why trying to give a single precise dollar amount for an entire country is stupid. Info on degrees and average earnings:

http://www.census.gov/prod/2002pubs/p23-210.pdf

Another decent guide might be whether you (or your household) are in the top 20% of income earners in your state / province. For the U.S. as a whole the top 20% of incomes begins around $80,000:

http://pubdb3.census.gov/macro/0320...c/new05_000.htm

The buying power of $80,000 a year will obviously vary by state and city. But generally more expensive cities and states also tend to have a bigger proportion of high-income earners, and therefore a richer top 20% of earners -- i.e., their lower-limit for the top 20% would be greater than $80,000 annually -- since people who earn less often choose not to live in expensive places.

I don't think this needs a whole new thread.

Well, like I said it depends on where you live.

Texas and the South in general are pretty cheap. :gsmile:

An $80,000 salary per year is indicative of an upper-middle class lifestyle opportunity. It is above the realms by which commercially feasible, mass-produced luxury can adequately be afforded within a general sense. Of course this standard is not static, if that is your point, nor can a "better lifestyle" be properly quantified within material means by some perspectives, but what exactly are you arguing here? Effective salary above $50,000 a year is above "middle class" - does this ensure that these people get whatever they want all of the time or that they aren't heavy in debt? Of course not, it's merely a general guideline composite of financial opportunity rather than strict fiscal scenario.

But by all means, continue this course of condescending ignorance based almost entirely upon an article of opinion; the irony of which being that you are demanding facts in the face of circumstantial subjection.
