girlfriends and general education

I donno, maybe my standards are too high, but if there's something that can turn me off it's shocking lack of knowledge in the most basic areas of culture, politics, religion etc.

In true Sarah Palin fashion my gf has lately revealed that
- she doesn't know that Muslims don't drink alcohol
- she has no idea who Alan Greenspan is (but studies economics)
- she doesn't know Goodfellas
- she doesn't know Dostjoewski
- she doesn't know the concept of "reverse pschology"
- she doesn't know the phenomenen of dowsing

and so on.

It's not that I'm this sort of cocky bastard who sits with an open book conducting regular examinations, rather these educational "black holes" pop up during casual conversations and then immediately kill them off, making me want to slap my forehead and run.

What are the worst things you had to hear from your partners?

"i have aids" or "i'm pregnant" or "don't touch me".

you sound lucky to have a girlfriend geek, stop crying.

I am completely with you there on being close to a girlfriend or even just a friend who is ignorant to a lot of things. I draw the line (obviously its a subjective line)

Not all Muslims don't drink alcohol, only the very observant ones.

And you managed to misspell psychology, Dostoyevsky/Dostoevsky, and phenomenon in one shot, so give her a break.

Isn't dowsing trying to find water with one of those y shaped sticks?

Also, maybe I'm a moron for not knowing Dostjoewski.

Dostojevskij?

I don't know... I've always admired my fiancée for being extremely intelligent and picking things quite easily, even though she had a horrible curriculum up until she reached university.

So, although she now studies Language Acquisition and knows next to nothing about Chomsky (kinda like your girlfriend not knowing who Greenspan is), she's willing to know more and more, and often turns to me for help. And, when I've got my head stuck in theory, she calls me back to planet Earth :p

Russian soft vowels are preceded by a "j" in central/eastern European languages, so he's talking about Dostoevsky/Dostoevski/Dostoyevsky/Dostoyeskiy/Dostoevskiy/Dostoyevski/Dostojevski/Dostojevkij/Dostojesky/Dostoewsky/Dostoeski/Dostoyewsky/Dostoyewskiy/Dostoewskiy/Dostoyewski/Dostojewski/Dostojewkij/Dostojesky...

You know, we should all learn how to write Cyrillic... I mean, there's just one way of writing his name in Russian :p

edit: And Del should fix TA's problems with text encoding :toothless
