i have social anxiety and it's extremely annoying. don't take any meds for it either just mind over matter but i still show the signs of it. what sucks is i'm a very upbeat person who doesn't let much get to them but i just can't deal with certain things

Anxiety attacks are annoying as hell to deal with. Started getting 'em randomly sometime in highschool. Weirdest thing ever since I'm incredibly chill and laid back by default, so much so that my pothead friends in HS used to call me an honorary pothead (though I'd never smoked). Usually if you know the reason for having anxiety you can do something to calm yourself, but that really isn't the case w/anxiety attacks. I never took meds for 'em though as they only happened once every few months. Haven't had one in at least a year or so but maybe I'll ask for meds anyway lol :p

Aaww, they can't *YIP!* help it *WOO!*

I had a customer w/Tourette's for a while... He was an older guy in his late 50's though so I just assumed he was a nutty old man until I saw a documentary on it. Once I had a better understanding it didn't bother me so much. It's gotta be infinitely *EEK!* more uncomfortable for them than any of us :(

How much good has the medicalization of mental problems actually done on a broad scale?

It seems like if modern treatment with drugs were so much more effective than trying to deal with such problems in other ways, then we could point to some broad trend such as a reduction in suicide rates or in the number of crimes committed by those with diagnosed mental illness, since vastly more people are now being diagnosed and treated. But as far as I know, no such positive trends exist.

Obviously you could point to specific cases of people helped by drugs -- I know plenty of them myself -- just as others could point to specific cases of people harmed by them. But that doesn't address the question of the overall effect of the "medicalized" paradigm.

[Edit: I'm not saying that drugs are never right or that people can simply wish their problems away. I'm questioning whether mental illness should be seen as analogous to bodily diseases or disorders, and whether the cavalier attitude of "throw a drug at it" is the right one.]

Im pretty sure Lithium Bicarbonate treatments for bipolar disorder(manic depressive) decrease suicide(either attempts or successions, i cant remember which one) six-fold.

my top three are....

1. Depression (what a crock of .... suck it up and deal with life like everyone else)

2. Anxiety Disorder (another crock of ..... deal with things like everyone else)

3. Bipolar (the flavor of the week disorder for the emo/scene/retard crowd)

It seems that everyone these days has some kind of disorder that prevents them from dealing with life like the rest of us....

They all piss me off..... Unless they have an affinity for tater tots and a mellon shapped head, i don't feel any sympathy for them at all....

2. Anxiety Disorder (another crock of ..... deal with things like everyone else) not heard much of this

3. Bipolar (the flavor of the week disorder for the emo/scene/retard crowd) Isnt this a serious one? , like a life shattering one.

But paranoid schizophrenia is mine , that things a killer and not for the person infected.

Dissociative Identity Disorder has GOT to be a bitch! ... at least for one or two of the multiple identities :stongue:

People with Boarderline Personality Disorder and Fictitious Personality Disorders are annoying (cut the bull!).

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is annoying as hell to everyone who has to put up with someone w/that . No clue how therapists teach people like that to get over themselves

NARCOLEPSY must be annoying as ALL HELL to have to live with!! One minute you're chillin', next thing you know you're on the floor, wide awake yet completely paralyzed. Animals with Narcolepsy are quite funny by contrast. Narcoleptic dogs especially :happy2:

If someone is certifiably bat crazy, i can appreciate that...... but these so called "conditions" which amount to nothing more than a prescription to lower your bar in life with a huge crutch of an excuse piss the hell out of me.
