the big clubs are needed or else there is no money to be made. |
i would say that is a good thing for music.
bring on the warehouses and the garages and the manchester fields |

wtf? :wtf:
i wasn't trying to answer your questions as i really don't understand what you're asking even. are you saying that without file sharing those 3000+ would have bought your release? if not, then you're not really losing anything, are you? |

I found links on 3 different free file hosting sites where one of our releases was downloaded over 3000+ times combined (they had counters for the file). Just try to see yourself as a musician for a second and think that 3000 people just took your music that you worked hard at creating without paying for it... and they don't give a damn. It was a pretty ty feeling coming across those links...
how does the music industry adapt to this? Do you have any suggestions?
I'm not in this for the money and I have a "normal" day job. But I absolutely hate it and I would love to do full time music (DJ, produce, run the label) and be completely happy, even if I made 50% of what I make at my current job.
Merry Christmas! |
How do you know some of those who downloaded the tracks illegally didn't turn around and buy it or other releases from your label? Perhaps some of them did. Perhaps they passed it on to their friends and they bought your tracks off Beatport.
Would you feel as ty if they listened to the track once, decided they didn't like it, then deleted it? |

Not even close... I said previously in my post re piracy:

because the person I quoted was stating "nonsense"

Nonsense ... Can anyone actually imagine a day where all the labels close up shop and no more music is made? This has always been a ridiculous idea. The fact remains that the music industry needs to adapt to a changing market. Either that or call for a bailout... |

to be honest, releasing electronic music has always been about promoting yourself, not about making money. you make money by playing gigs. i'd be glad to see my music reach out to 3000+ people, that's why you make music, to get it out to the masses not keep it hidden behind a $1.99
and skip is right, no way would one sell even half of that number |

1 - impossible to tell / gauge... doesn't make what they did right. That's why some music stores have full length previews now... but it's a double edged sword. Those persons may have never heard of Audio Logic before and b/c of that 1 download they now know of the label and become a fan... still... morally, not right and beating a dead horse... i'm done :)
2 - not at all, see #1
just to clarify, I'm not condemning the people that downloaded the said music. I'm stating the fact that it sucked when I came across it & it's a problem that affects the artists, DJs & labels we all love... what do we do to make it right? |

| if homos support your music, you're in good shape, their the only ones that still actually buy music, along with young white suburban kids and women... |

what can be done about it?
i cant see anything being done really, they can pull certain individuals up and make and example of them but still that is not going to stop the problem.
It will just be a never ending battle as far as i can see.But hopefully im wrong. |

realistically electronic music at the moment is strangely looking a lot like disco around 1980 ;) |
probably even more than you were implying hehe :p
in the early 70's disco was underground music, as the decade went on it became over-commercialized, which eventually lead to a back lash against the genre. Of course many hardcore fans kept it alive into the eighties for the evolution into other genres...lots of parallels there.
as for the problem, honestly i think the genres that seem to be pro-vinyl will stay pretty strong. Just part of the evolution of music imo. a lot of these older established labels are pretty washed up and are being out done by smaller labels or labels people are newly discovering.
sorry nick, always will respect you for the roll you've played in music, but i guess it's time to release another GU comp if times are tough. |
