It's not hollywood. There is no such thing as shoot to wound. Not to mention even if you shoot the guy in the leg, odds are, you'll end up nicking the artery down there. (and he bleeds to death)

Pistols are notoriously inaccurate things. Unless you're about 5m away, most people wont be able to shoot the chest, let alone the leg.

By the time that the cops decide to use the gun, the dude is considered most likely to harm someone and use of lethal force is last resort to stop him.

there was just an article about in NYC of a man waving a bat and he was killed by officer shots.

"Four cops and a sergeant from the 52nd Precinct's anti-crime unit arrived at 11:46 p.m. and raced up the stairs. They had their police shields out, Browne said."

Four cops and a sergeant with each having a gun(well we know 1 had one)and 1 guy with a bat. Now that is what you call f'd up judgement :wtf:

because if cops had a policy to shoot to stop, the chances of killings in those situations would be so great that it would be negligent to do so. You can't institute a policy that has a huge flaw like that. Too many people would be killed when all the cop was trying to do is incapacitate.

I wouldn't say pistols are notoriously inaccurate... Sure they aren't rifles but they are (usually) glocks which are high quality pistols and the officers are trained to shoot accurately. Cops have pistols because they're usually dealing with close quarters and don't need accuracy over like 30m. Also, chances of dying from a shot to the lower body are much lower, regardless of arteries. However, cops are trained to hit the biggest target as previously stated which is the chest. Obviously things happen very quickly in these situations and alot of times it isn't possible to shoot to wound so they have to go with the biggest target. Situations like these are where the tazer shines my friends

suicide by cop?
pkcRAISTLIN
if you charge a police officer wielding a knife, you deserve to be killed. good work from the police.
elFreak
this is why i tend to see it as a possible suicide by cop scenario.
Soeder
Cops should've used knives to level the terms

Oh man...because of a similar event there was CHAOS in Greece lately! The things i saw in the city i live were f*cking new to me...breaking and burning shops...and cops answering with tear-gas... wtf...

violent crime in Greece is almost absent (although i think that there is a slight rise in recent years)and that was crazy.

Thank god that there weren't any more victims...(and i hope that they will not be)

Cops should never use guns unless other civilians (or themselves) are threatened. They should just proceed to arrest the trouble-maker and thats it.

a knife is trouble....good riddance.
