well i was going to say DLP, but it would seem none of your gentlemen really consider it a part of the argument. |
DLP is great actually, but I know a lot of people don't like it for whatever reason. |

lcds generally suck, but no such thing as a decent 32" plasma (no major manufacturer makes one).
for that price, you don't have a whole lot of options, but the panasonic (lx85) has the lowest input lag of the bunch. |
This is true for ALL LCD panels in both computers and TVs. A lot of piece of TN panels that have horrible color reproduction, blacks, etc. |

We have a couple of Westinghouse products floating around here (A 22" and a 37" monitor)... I use the 37" for my computer, and I think it looks great :D
Helps that I got it for $580 off of Woot. :P |

This is fine if you are an audio/videophile and have no budget limits. Tell me what makes more sense:
You have $1500 to buy a TV and that is all the money you can spend on TVs for the next 6 years. Sony TV X is $1500, its 1080p and 42" top of the line. Off Brand TV Y is 42" 1080p just like the Sony but the specs aren't quite as good, but then it only costs $500.
Tell me which person here is smarter:
Person 1:
Buys Sony TV X on 1/1/09 and loves showing off their fancy new TV. On 1/1/12 they see an ad for Sony TV Z. Its a 52" TV with way better specs than Sony TV X and it looks cool as and its only .5" thick. Damn, Sony TV X looks like a piece of compared to this new one. On top of all that it only costs $1000. Too bad you don't have any money to spend on a TV for another 3 years.
On 1/1/15 Person 1 has Sony TV X and $0 of the original $1500
Person 2:
Buys TV Y on 1/1/09 and saves the other $1000. On 1/1/12 they see the same add for Sony TV Z but don't want to spend $1000. They wait until 1/1/13 and buy it for $650.
On 1/1/15 Person 2 has Sony TV Z, TV Y which has been in their bedroom the last 2 years, and $350 of the original $1500 |
Kind of a vicious process though, if you look at it that way. There's always something better around the corner, and what's out now is always going to be cheaper in the not-too-distant future. |

viewing angles still suck
they're too dark (I hate the over-saturated lcd look, but I'd like to be able to see the picture, at least)
much higher repair rate
they're too big (nothing smaller than 50)
they're too big (you can't mount them, so no tilt or swivel)
they scream "I wanted a big tv but couldn't afford one"

| Can't go wrong with a Westinghouse. I got a 37" LCD Westinghouse 1080p for like $400 from Best Buy about 2 years ago or so, probably cheaper now. |

Exactly, and this is exactly why I'm saying to not dump a lot of money into the "top of the line" model of an immature technology like flat panel TVs. Unless money is no object it just doesn't make sense. When CRT was the primary TV technology you could drop $700 on a 35" CRT and be pretty certain that 10 years from now the 35" CRTs might be somewhat cheaper but probably not much better than what you bought. And in 5 years there was no way that the latest and greatest 35" CRT was going to be so much better than what you have that you would really want to go out and get a new one.

Ah, roger that... I think I kinda missed the point you were making. We're pretty much saying the same thing. |

I am 100% with you on this. I really do not disagree at all with your reasonings behind your advice. It is sound advice overall. :) |

I am thoroughly against buying the top of the line stuff in anything at the time. |
