Ok, never having owned a virus, but always wanted one, I can only give my list of VSt favorites and some reasons why you should try them out.
Sylenth1 - Dealt with at the start of the thread, but this "simple" synth just simply sounds GOOD and that's it. Take another synth and set it to similar settings, try to recreate the same sound but sylenth's oscillators and filters are just so ing liquid it's like sonic ecstacy :) Give it a go, it's a good contender for alot of the classic virus sounds, but like others have pointed out the architecture is very different. No PWM, which sucks
z3ta+ - Oldie but goldie. Lots of modulation, lots to choose from. Make SURE to set the render quality to High (took me 2 years to realize that :)) Like Sylenth1, no PWM, which again SUCKS!!
Vember Audio Surge - Wavetables, built in FX, nice filters, incredible modulation. Basically this can do much of what the Virus does but it has a really flat sonic character IMO.
Albino3 - Again, loads of parameters and features, closer to the virus in character I think. Fat filters (many versions) and good pre-filter saturation. I really like this one alot. Can do supersaws (oscillator unisono). Lots of digital waveforms to choose from and can morph between them, but no real wavetables. I think this is as close as you'll come to a Virus VST emulation :) |

I can't believe noones mentioned Tone 2 Gladiator wtf?
That synth has the ability to make certain sounds that are very similar to a virus.
There is one patch called "lead arena" that I could guarantee if you told someone it was a virus lead not a single person could tell. |

About the closest ones I can think to matching some of these capabilities are Gladiator 2 and Z3TA+, but even they have some pretty substantial differences and have some features/specs that the Virus doesn't have.

Why not just get a virus? Or better yet, make a new sound with z3ta and that will become popular and the virus will be left behind :D When it comes down to it, no one is going to agree that a synth sounds like a virus untill you actually play a real virus.
Also, ive heard some virusy sounds on the V-Station from Novation...anyone else? |
