Not really. I only have ideas of what people shouldn't do, which is prescribe musts onto art. As I've said I have no problem with music having external meaning- hell, in my sig I have a mix based around a literary text, where the music is quite explicitly referring to something external to itself. However that referent is peripheral and most of the people who downloaded it had never read the book and still enjoyed it purely as music. Music can do this, but it doesn't have to, and people shouldn't say it must in order to have merit, or judge the music on its external referent.

Are you telling me that "techno", "house" and "trance" are not genres? That you're referring to canons of music identified by common genre tags and seperated by philosophy and yet you're not talking about genres? Bollocks. You use the words "types" and "forms"- practical synonyms for "genre". If you think you're avoiding genre discourse by not using the word you're fooling nobody except possibly yourself. |

Ok, fine, I have to temper my words a bit - I do believe in genres as much as they are used as adjectives, not nouns. By that I mean, they become descriptors rather than classifications, and they are not exclusive.
btw, regarding 'genre': this is a preview of a personal project I am developing currently:
The MASSIVE project is a user-constructed database of musicians, labels, label bosses, mastering engineers, cutting plants, record stores, collectives, etc, etc. Basically I want to map the known electronic music universe, and then move from there. It operates on the simple premise that users create these entities, then link them together with certain relationships. Using computer algorithms, a map is rendered of the resulting social network. This reveals what we call 'scenes' and also, ultimately, 'genre' as an emergent ideological and cultural phenomena.
I will be modelling 'genre' as descriptors that are democratically tagged to artists's work. So 50 people might tag a work with a genre, maybe 70% say one thing, 10% another, 10% another, 10% another. Every tag around an artist will become part of a collective color-coded descriptive cloud that surrounds an entity. With every entity having its own cloud, zooming all the way out, you can see the entire known universe (or at least that which has been recorded in the database) covered in a descriptive cloud - one will be able to see 'genre' as a more emergent phenomenon. You will be able to 'see' genre as a kind of collective idea cloud
whereas discogs focuses on concrete details about records, this focuses on the social interactions between people, business deals, remixes, etc. You can consider it kind of like ishkur's guide, except this is created by users and it's based on actual relationships, not the whims of one guy.
I have a lot of things in the works for this, but I don't really want to get into it in any detail publicly at this point. |

well its going to be more than that, it's going to be a resource for discovering music. I'm developing an adobe flex application that will allow you to navigate through it - clicking each entity will center the universe on that entity, then you may proceed to another, etc. you will also be able to navigate with your ears and hands through a kind of sonic landscape created by sound sources emanating from the nodes
each node will also be timecoded, so you will be able to move a slider and watch the thing grow |
