Anyone want to take a guess at where those come from? |
Duh.
Liberal governments create them. |

Heh, is this ironic in the sense of him shoveling it on, or in the context of his "shovel-ready" programs, or both?

Well, technically they do, but the same efficiency argument applies there. |

LOL Lots of progressive tax system bashing here.
Look, I'm not saying it's perfect at all. But unfortunately, bitching about it doesn't make it go away. My way of dealing with it is trying to believe that it, in fact, does help people. I do think it does, just that the money doesn't go as far as it does in Yurop.
That being said, i'm all for the flat tax (on either income or VAT).
Just one ing tax
No more deductions, no more corporate vs personal tax code, no more exceptions, blah blah blah. One ing tax. In my dream world, the whole CRA guide book would consist of one page, with one line on it:
Tax = XX %. Pay it bitches |

debating (bitching about it) can make it go away. Exchange of ideas is how a democracy develops ideas. If the electorate comes to the conclusion that a flat tax is needed then the politicians will respond. So the more we discuss a flat tax here, and elsewhere with as many people as we can, the more possible it becomes.
Same for any issue. |

Several influential people have proposed flat tax schemes. Steve Forbes, Trent Lott, and Jerry Brown, to name a few. Several smaller countries already have a flat tax (implementation details obviously vary).
I might go so far as to say that lack of honest debate ("bitching") is the only thing really preventing a flat tax. Every time someone proposes it, another like Gordon Brown pooh-poohs it saying something to the effect of "millionaires paying the same tax as factory workers? NO WAY!" (It's the same tax rate, you morons). And voters shrug their shoulders and continue to vote for those same s without really thinking about it.
Taxes are complicated. People don't understand how much they really pay, which is why governments are able to keep cramming more and more of them into the code. Whenever a discussion comes up about flat tax and what the benefits would be, people's eyes glaze over and they go into a "tl;dr" mode (as in 3 or 4 posts above). Spreading awareness really could elicit a change, eventually.
Of course, sales taxes are already flat (well, mostly). Yet another reason why I say we should just raise those and get rid of the income tax; people are already used to the idea of a flat tax on sales, they just can't seem to stop freaking out when it relates to income (i.e. The Rich). |
