UAD Cambridge > Sonalksis SV315 > UAD 1176LN > UAD Neve 88RS > PSP Vintage Warmer > PSP Saturation > Waves L1 Ultramaximizer
The trick is that each compressor is only compressing about 1 db MAX. Its just enough for each compressor to add its particular "colour" to the signal without squashing. Working this way i get that nice EDM "compressed" sound without things getting squashed to death. Sometimes I may switch a plugin or two out depending on the circumstances, or I hay change the order of the plugins, usually where the Neve 88RS or the VintageWarmer goes. I will sometimes put a UAD LA2A in there and take out the UAD 1176LN, for example.
The Ultramaximzer is there only to catch any short, random overs. It never gets past 2 db GR.
Keep in mind that I don't make full on trance, I make progressive house and tech house, so this signal chain works perfectly for me. |
I never had that much on my masterchannel. Care to join a before and after snippet, to see how it's working out? |

Sure, I'll post something later on tonight after I get home. |

Interesting. I would have expected the opposite result. So you're using very low ratios with all of these compressors, and I guess setting the threshold progressively lower at each stage? And you find that you hear no pumping at all? |

Yes, very low ratio and the threshold is low as well. I'l post examples tonight. |

| Hrm, I honestly don't notice much difference other than the volume and the changes that happen when something gets louder. It sounds kinda tight, but I guess Housy stuff is supposed to sound that way. |

OK, here are the examples from a track I'm working on now: |
So those are exactly the same? I'm surprised the most by the difference in bass, it's pretty dramatic.
I threw the original into Wavelab and it says the average RMS of the uncompressed one (after normalizing) was around -17 and the compressed was -11 dB. So pretty much spot on with what you said earlier, 6 compressors and maybe 1 dB of gain each.
These must have thresholds around -20 dB I guess? I'm not used to setting them that low.
Either way, thanks for that, gives me lots to think about it. |

Yeah, I mean except for the plugins being on or off. I basically just bounced one with all my plugins on the master channel on, then one with all of them bypassed.
Also remember that I sold off a large portion of my studio to buy the Focal Twin monitors, which are very expensive mastering class monitors. That helps a lot in being able to hear the bass properly as well as making sure everything is balanced well tonally. The bass on the monitors is tight and focused, especially on non-EDM music that is produced well.
I really like that tight, compressed sound thats so prevalent in Progressive House now, so that's kind of the sound I have been going for lately.
In this chain there are only 2 compressors, but I have a few other channel strips saved that are variations on this. One of them includes the 1176LN and has the Neve 88RS compressor turned on, but I mainly use that for the more tech house stuff.
Honestly, the plugins that really make the difference here are the Sonalksis compressor, the Vintage Warmer and the Neve 88RS. The others aren't really doing a whole lot.
Here are the settings for each plugin:
Sonalksis:
4:1 Ratio
Threshold -15
Attack: 45
Release: Auto
GR: ~ -1
Pultec Pro:
Master: Full & Bright preset, with a few tiny tweaks.
Linear Phase EQ:
LC 30, 24db/oct
UAD Cambridge:
LC Freq: 40
Type: Butterworth 3
HC Freq: 18k
Type: Bessel 3
UAD Neve 88RS:
EQ section only
Band 1: 10K, +3, Hi Shelf On
Band 2: 0
Band 3: 0
Band 4: 73, +1, Lo Shelf On.
PSP Vintage Warmer:
Drive: -5
Knee: 10
Speed: 25
Release: 2
GR: -.5db
Ultramaximizer:
Threshold: -3
Out Ceiling: -0.2
GR: -2 |
