So those are exactly the same? I'm surprised the most by the difference in bass, it's pretty dramatic.
I threw the original into Wavelab and it says the average RMS of the uncompressed one (after normalizing) was around -17 and the compressed was -11 dB. So pretty much spot on with what you said earlier, 6 compressors and maybe 1 dB of gain each.
These must have thresholds around -20 dB I guess? I'm not used to setting them that low.
Either way, thanks for that, gives me lots to think about it. |
So much for Not Sniffing the Compression Glue Eh?
Years ago, I tried to tell you that you underestimated compression. |

things i noticed from eric J's samples posted
the non compressed spectral frequency display (im using adobe audition) fills up the range, while the compressed one cuts off a little lower ~ guess this is what you guys call headroom
overall, the volume levels on the compressed sample went higher than the non compressed, BUT the sample at its highest was just under 0db and at its lowest was just under -3db ~ a 3db difference at most
while the uncompressed often peaked at just under -3db but sometimes went as low as -12db ~ a 9db difference between levels, 3 times the difference of the compressed sample
from what i see, compression really does make the quiter things louder, while retaining the energy and sound of the louder things
also - good job on posting your compressors and settings, gave me more to think about as well
thx for the videos notle :p |

Didn't like his approach at all, he came off a swindler. There is no connection to the music or the tools to make music in his "approach." 4 hrs to make his tracks? Heck no. Put some time and thought into it. |

Nice little loop, i think the main difference between the 2, apart from the obvious jump in loudness, is the boost in the highs
Would be interesting to hear just the compressors in action... |

Disagree. Put some more feeling in it instead of thought. I think too much and my tracks take much more time then they should. I actually think a lot of music would be better if it would have been done more spontaneously. |

Making music through feelings is essential, I could have used 5 other adjectives to describe what is missing in his approach. Thought and time(noun) is what's missing here more than anything. But I agree with you on the sponteneity leading to great things, because a lot of great ideas can come fast, but I don't know if that is his reasoning for making his tracks in 4 hours. I've laid down ideas fairly fast to some of my favorite pieces, but how do you cosnsistently sculpt something like a piece of music in 4 hours? It is possible but it should be rare enough that you can't really claim to it in an interview.
Maybe its the genre of music he produces in. But if your producing Deep House, Tech House, Techno, music that is heavy on nuance and translating emotion in a more subtle and sublime manner, then you have to really spend the time and make sure every little bit is translating the way you want it to, otherwise the idea is lost. I think Electro is similar to Trance, you can get away with a bit more with uncontrolled methodology (pressing a button and watching the synth and VST do its magics), to make what seems to be enjoyable music to those that enjoy it. While Deep House, Tech House, and Techno rely on thoughtful, subtle, nuance heavy means to have similar impact. |

There is a difference between Deep House and Tech House? Learn something every day.
But I agree, 4 hours is hardly enough time to make anything of significance on average. Really good stuff takes time, all of my 'best' tracks have months of work in them. And I even have about 2 tracks now I have been working on for 2 years, because I want every single aspect done right. |
