But I agree, 4 hours is hardly enough time to make anything of significance on average. Really good stuff takes time, all of my 'best' tracks have months of work in them. And I even have about 2 tracks now I have been working on for 2 years, because I want every single aspect done right.

Isn't it great to learn new things? Part of what makes this portion of TA attractive to me.

the best tracks happen in 2 days. seriously, its like a law of nature.

Creative output comes in different durations of time for different people. Doesn't bother me at all.

I wouldn't disagree, the best ideas come fast, but finishing a track, start to finish in 4 hours doesnt quite fit under that.

Looks like FM is uploading some of their videos:

But the limiter only triggers once every 8 bars or so for 2 dB and the compressor only ever has about 1.5-2 dB gain reduction going on (although thats constant). I get pretty commercial levels out of that. 6 dB sounds like massive overkill although I'm at uni so can't listen to the link atm.

How often do you get the full 6 dB? Is it just once ever few bars, or are the needles constantly moving on your GR meters?

6db is probably the max, I get more along the lines of 3db. Its rare that i would get as much as 6. Its highly track dependent too. A busy progressive trance track is going to have more GR than a spaced out house number. Plus I make adjustments depending on what the track calls for. This post is over a year old, so in that time I have come up with several variations on this basic theme, but essentially, its the same thing.

I've been torn by whether to keep my master clean or have devices on it. Ive worked both ways, but I'm probably going to go down the route of mixing into devices on the master as I can see it speeding up workflow as eric said.

Nice one on the FM youtube link.

I also agree the best ideas happen very quick, usually in under 4 hours. As for completing tracks in 4 hours, whos is to say what is right or wrong. Laidback luke is doing well so if it works for him then?

I don’t think there really is a time-limit to a succesfull track. I.e., I had a track lying for almost two months because I couldn’t come up with a decent lead melody until yesterday. But that doesn’t make the track less better.

I always was a big opponent regarding to putting effects on the masterbus. But since quite some time, I have filled up the masterbus ;). First I use an EQ to cut the lows and upper highs, after that there's multiband compressor, and after that a limiter. The compressor isn’t fully blowing and the limiter just takes the peaks. I’m used to mixing loud into the master bus.

Indeed if you make good music in 4 hours or 4 months who cares. I think as long as you can remove the devices on the master and have the track sounding reasonable thats ok. I've heard some tracks sounds awesome with devices on the master then you take it away and it falls apart, even some demo tracks that come with the software to produce.

Theran
Well, that's ofcourse the main reason of putting them on the masterbus, to make it all sound better.
