bout time you figured that out. Avalon bookings have been focusing more on musical side of things not the top 10 DJ. you might come across a DJ you never heard of and they blow your mind.
true, there are a TON of washers at avalon. but when it gets busy like last night, you can't really tell.
Actually, while I applaud Avalon for going outside the box, they are just as guilty as anyone else when it comes to booking the same DJs over and over again. I am seeing the same lineups over and over again in cycles.
I'm not complaining, but just saying.

We get the best DJ's from September to June. Once Ibiza season starts, all the good ones are in Europe.
I know the management from both sides read these posts so I don't I will keep my comments positive. (I'm respect the management and promoters from both establishments)
Vanguard has the better venue as far as sound, lighting and patio.
It is nice that you don't get padded down like you are going to join @ Avalon, however that can be a double edged sword.
As far as talent goes, each venues at times are smart enough to book opposite style DJ's similar to last Saturday night (Top trance DJ vs Top House DJ's)
As far as the bathroom situation goes. Vanguard has a main bathroom, a single bathroom in "The Front" room and for the guys a 3 stall bathroom upstairs.
Avalon has the main bathroom, a couple single stalls in the Honey Lounge, and 1 restroom upstairs (that one usually goes fastest)
Avalon has the better closing time, but 4am is enough some nights. The whole different count, different prices after 2am @ Avalon is kinda tricky, but I guess the trick is to go earlier rather than later to save on time and $$$.
All the lights, glowsticks etc. can go to Circus. Personally, I have really bad astigmatism and wear thick contact lenses at night, so I can't stand lightshows! I turn my back to avoid visual contact. So any security who takes that away is my friend!

i know where the best staff are, no doubt...plus. with no hassling bathroom attendants:tongue3
but between Avalon and Vanguard only, Avalon gets my vote too.

I love how this argument goes back and forth. Everybody is saying Avalon now. Many of the same people have backed Vanguard in the past and may do so again in the future.
I think the venue and the staff at Vanguard are better than Avalon. I also have a hard time dealing with a lot of the after-hours crowd at Avalon. The Vanguard patio FTW, but the resident DJ out there is, well, dated to say the least. Drinks are usually $1 cheaper per @ Vanguard, but that's not a deal breaker for me. I can carry a flask into either venue now without a problem :)
But the one thing that gets my vote for Avalon is their talent booking. For the last year or so, it's been spot on with a mix of rising talent and well-established names. The techno/tech-house bookings have been major contributors to the renaissance of those genres here in LA. Plus, the current Avalon residents are head and shoulders above the Giant residents @ Vanguard.
I had been a loyal Vanguard patron for a couple years for many reasons, the main ones being the quality of the crowd and the venue layout. Having a monthly residency there for a while didn't hurt either LOL. But now that the bookings have been consistenly better at Avalon, I've been swayed for now. To be honest, I don't go out all that much on Saturdays anymore, but when I do decide to hit one of the main Hollywood venues, Avalon is usually the place.

Having easy access to guestlist...your welcome...and bartenders that make you double sized drinks helps :) My view is a little different because I've always been working for one or the other so I've never just been a normal clubber. I haven't been to Avalon much in the last few years either, but I can say I miss it. Well I miss every LA venue right now. Although being a patio person, not having the Terrace would suck. The staff at Vanguard is actually really cool from security to the bartenders. The club is run as efficiantly as possible. It's not an easy business. Aside from the big big nights, you get in that club pretty quick. They run a tight ship but you have to. It's actually always been a little scary that they don't search at Avalon. A club that size needs too. And why do they bum rush you when you reach for a stick of gum? Because they didn't check to see if you had drugs when you came in. You have to admit, once in Vanguard, you don't feel like you're being watched. Security is pretty lax inside. Just don't stand around in the lobby, and please don't try to hang out outside the front door.
As far as the talent...two big venues blocks apart that give you all you could want in the EDM scene. A little more main stream for Giant, but LA demands those names. Avalon gives you a little more of the underground and dirtier tech with some mainstream names thrown in. Some of those big names will jump between venues from time to time because they like to play at both.
All in all you have two very different but similar awesome Saturday night venues.
Man...between the Dodgers being in town and discussions like this I really need to come visit LA :)

As is being pointed out, each venue has it's pros/cons and the talent can vary from week to week. Avalon definitely has been more forward thinking in regards to some of the talent and it certianly does a good job with the variety of parties in the smaller rooms.
LA is lucky they have such good big club Saturday night options. Some nights you can even hit both. Nice.
