and when are you dropping by? |
As soon as possible. Would have loved to have been in LA this past weekend, but we had a busy Easter week at work and also had to do our taxes. I had a feeling it was going to be a good night at Avalon since Armin was going to pack Vanguard. I saw Angello and crew at the Beatport party in Miami and they were on fire.
If I can get the right airfare, we might fly in late saturday night and go to Vanguard for Dubfire and then bounce over to Avalon. Who is spinning at Avalon this weekend ? |

| Avalon when the music is good and the crowd is into it, the vibe is really good, and you sorta have this community feel. Vanguard feels more like a wharehouse rave. Never had a problem with security at either. Vanguard seems to get more women, it caters to a more mainstream crowd that are attracted by the Patio and the more mainstream DJ's. So if you want to apply crotch onto booty, Vanguard is better. Avalon is usually cockfest, Vanguard is cockfest with women sprinkled in between, but they are both improving as dance music becomes more mainstream. Avalon's biggest mistake was closing the upstairs area off (is it gone forever?). Vanguard could use more theme'd nights. Avalon gets the better upfront talent, Vanguard gets good talent too if your casual clubber and just choose the good talent nights, so they are fairly equal on the talent side for most people that don't go out every weekend. |

Ok, I'm bored and half drunk so i'll throw my unrequested $.02 in.
As a venue, I've always liked avalon better. Better lights, better setup, and yes, better sound. I usually go out to hear the music as my first priority, so I go to where the DJ I want to hear is spinning. In case of a tie, I go where I can get in free or cheapest (btw, thanks jeremey and billy for the yrs of hookups).
Now don't think I'm against V-guard, its a very cool place. Great patio for those nights I'm just out to hang out. It could use more places to sit and still hear the main room music though.
As far as the crowd goes, I'm not trying to get laid, so cockfest isn't huge deal for me. Of course hot chicks are always a bonus, but not a deciding factor on going/avoiding any certain place.
As for security, I'm gonna give the nod to Avalon for the easy flask smuggling. Other than that, I've never had an encounter with security at either place that I didn't deserve.
Back to the sound issue, I know there is going to be quite the contingent of you out there that are gonna scream "blah blah funktion 1 funktion 1 funktion 1 blah blah". And I agree. V-guard"s Funktion 1 system sounds great anywhere you stand in the main room. Having said that, there is no better sounding system that i have heard than when you are on the dance floor at avalon. Period. Especially dead center and two thirds back. Now once you step off the floor, it sounds muddy and much quieter. This is on purpose folks. The idea is so you can still sort of have a conversation when you don't feel like dancing. When they have concerts at avalon, they use the line arrays flown above the stage, and those fill the entire place with great sound (not AS great, imo). All in all, Avalon's sound and acoustics feel extremely well planned, engineered and implemented whereas Vanguard (tho still extremely good sounding) seems like they just bought some expensive stuff and plopped it in that big echo-y room, ready to be removed the next morning like it was rented. Which is why vguard still has that old Qtopia feel, where there was seemingly a different rig every weekend, depending on who was throwing the rave that night.
okee dokee, flame on and such. I'm too drunk to care about proof reading what I just typed. |

That particular "bathroom bum" is everywhere. Ritual Friday nights...saw him @ Goa. He was even in Area last Tuesday for Sharam. He probably takes in 500+ a night easy in dollars. |

Last time I was at Avalon it was a sick display of etarded crack heads. NO THANKS!
It's too bad because it is a better building than Vanguard. |
