my point is that 4000 canadians die every year from various flu strains.
but since this one has an evil name it's just exploded into this big fest of idiot news casts and idiots wearing face masks to 'protect' themselves.
seriously it's just a ing flu. Yah it's extra dirty cause it's from mexico, but i mean. .
100 + people died, IN MEXICO where their health care system is a hole to begin with.
7 people in ontario have it so far, and they've all been released from hospital cause they're fine. it's a slow news week, and most of you are ing morons.

Main difference with flu pandemics is that:
a) It's a totally new strain that's crossed the animal/human barrier as opposed to an existing human virus that has mutated within the human population (and to which some portion of the population will already have been naturally immunized) as is the case with seasonal flu epidemics. For this reason no one has immunity to it yet and it spreads a lot faster than your average flus.
b) Seems to be killing young healthy people.. this is rare regardless of the quality of healthcare system.
It isn't the media making up its the WHO and the CDC and it's analogous agencies around the world.. Chances are everything will be fine but flu pandemics are fairly rare and can potentially turn into a big deal, so they have to take precautions. The Spanish flu pandemic had a case mortality of 5% (maybe more) and killed 50-100 million worldwide over a couple of years.

Hah, just got home after watching the celtics game and was printing stuff out to my sister and she was saying she'd been feeling ty all night, so naturally i suggested swine flu in jest. Turns out just today there were two cases discovered about a mile from my apartment :p
That said, it's coming up on finals for all of us in college so if I do get infected, i'll charge maybe 50 bucks a pop if people want to get sneezed on so they can get it and hopefully get out of their finals..

I think we're all gonna have to be wearing masks soon, think asia....

WHO has nothing regarding the flu and yet they raised the level again today? Something is obviously wrong here.
The professionals you're referring to don't say it isn't that big of a deal, they're saying the death-rate is very similar. Oh, and it's actually just one professional you're talking about, right? As for the death-rate I would say it's too early to compare this flu with others. Many tests are still in process.
The point is the new virus is spreading and nations want to stop that. It is not about journalists trying to harvest hysteria in the public, is about national leaders, advised by experts on health matters, trying to stop the disease.
I have some sources but all are in Spanish, I'll try looking for some in English after I get back from class.
I wouldn't go to the extreme saying we're all going to die because of this. Mexico will try to normalize public life next week. Schools will re-open as well as businesses. It seems to me that the "hype" is coming from other countries, like Argentina banning flying to Mexico.
Gah, I don't even know where to begin with this.

Nothing has been noted publicly... period. Unless you have access to records that the rest of us don't, I am pretty sure that there hasn't been any source to verify the ultimate cause of death among those dead by H1N1.

At the time that I had posted, they had yet to update their site. Regardless, if you review their site now, they do not openly admit that this is a huge threat. They are simply taking precautionary measures because they don't know everything about the illness quite yet.

Did you read the entire article? The Doctor actually did say that this was being blown out of proportion. Unfortunately I don't have hours of time to sift through the thousands of sensationalized articles to find the very rare few that actually use some common sense and aren't attempting to scare everyone less. (Woot for run-on sentences!)

Ok, maybe people are "wanting to stop the disease", but are you honestly telling me that you don't think news sources all over the world aren't capitalizing on the fear-mongering potential of this story? Many of the news articles are over dramatizing the situation, or misrepresenting the facts/numbers. It's all to get more reads and more hits because it's all about making money.
The "hype" is coming from the media, plain and simple. If it weren't for the insane coverage over this ridiculous thing, Egypt would not be killing pigs, and Argentina would not be banning flights to Mexico. People would have gone on with their daily lives being none the wiser.

You might also want to google "cytokine storm." The reason it kills the healthy is because the bodies of healthy people release too many cytokines.
Do you have any source to back up the claim that this is killing healthy people who have gotten proper health care??
