My Ear Was Bleeding...

Man, I can't stress this enough. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEARING. I been DJing since 1992 and never did once I paid attention to my dad all those times when he used to tell me to wear ear plugs.
Now I wish I did.
Last week, my left ear was bleeding. It happened one day I was spending time with my girlfriend. I felt something funny inside of my ear, used a cotton swab, and it came out with blood. Not soaking in blood, but enough to scare the out of me.
I'm gonna go to the doctor and get my ear checked soon. Hopefully it isn't related to DJing and I'm hoping it was something temporary. However, I also been noticing that that same ear sounds a bit different than the other.
I'm now looking around for some professional ear plugs. However, I will hold back on purchasing them until I see my doctor. I wanna see what he recommends.

Was this @ or during an event? You need a decibel level gage. I think there is an app for that on an iphone.
Keep us posted. |

I never leave home without my pair. It's too risky in my opinion because every venue sets their stuff differently and most venues don't do it properly.
Got mine as generics, but they fit well enough and I can totally still hear. No audible difference just not as loud.
Best $13 you can spend on continued DJing and clubbing. I only don't wear them when I DJ because I rarely use a monitor (seeing as most places monitors being pretty shotty at best).
Check it here: Etymotic Research. I wear the Baby Blues while a friend of mine and fellow DJ wears the Regular White ones. On a side note, they are also sold by Anjunabeats via CDJshop, and of course they make customs ones! |

Before you go out and spend $200 on custom earplugs give these a try Sonic Defenders. These were originally designed for shooting, but one day I decided to try them while I was DJ'ing and they work great! They fit very snug to your ear and are very soft so you will hardly notice you are wearing them. They are comparable to custom plugs IMO.
Here is a quick rundown of the features
Features
* 16dB Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) for EP3 Sonic Defenders with stoppers in
* 19dB Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) for EP4 Sonic Defenders Plus with stoppers in
* Lowers potentially dangerous noise levels above 80dB
* Hear safe sound levels as if you weren't wearing ear plugs
* Ergonomic design and multi-flanged stem conforms to ear shape for comfort and earpiece retention (EP3's double-flanged; EP4 triple-flanged for larger ear canals)
* Made from soft, hypoallergenic, medical-grade polymer
* Low profile design allows you to keep them in place while wearing a mask, helmet, hat, or while using phone, headphones or supplemental hearing muffs
