| i can definitely see some merit to this idea of people hiding behind atheism just like people hide behind religion. there's going to be both in each group. |

Kind of daft though if you believed xtianity was true to just ignore it, you'd be knowingly condemning yourself to hell.
What annoys me most about the bull quoted by Mrjive is that these twats just can't accept that there are people who don't believe in their god...I think it's insecurity. I think it's a reaction to the fact that deep down, they realise how far fetched their beliefs are. Demonising atheists as inferior drunken immoral porn addicts who want to sin is a way of dealing with this. |

It's not disbelief they would be hiding behind though - it's commonality. It's an entirely human thing to band within groups of like-minded people, whether this is disgenuine to the tenets of that belief (or non-belief) is usually quite irrelevant as it is a survival mechanism that seemingly comes entirely naturally, I would say.
I needn't mention that religious people do it all of the time. |

True, but considering how unpopular atheism is in many parts of the world im not quite sure who these atheists are that require atheistic "commonality", im sure they can find such in many other facets of their personality, culture or social stature. |
