Moving To Madison, Wisconsin - Some help with EDM?

Hey guys,

I am moving to Madison, Wisconsin in September. I just got a place on the lake in a frat house. I will be starting my PhD in Materials science at Uni of Wi-Madison.

I am an avid electronic music fan and have been to almost all the top edm clubs in the world (Space, guvernment, mansion, etc), and events (DEMF (4 times),WEMF, and list goes on. I also was a resident DJ at one of the top clubs in Windsor - accross detroit in canada.

My question is... Will I get my share of electronic music and events in Madison? What are the bars/clubs that play electronic music and also are there any large scale events in Madison or near Madison?

In addition... Are there any electronic events on boats or anything down on the lakes around madison? They have them in Toronto all the time, and was recently on the DEMF boat afterparty. Anything similar around the lakes in Madison?

Very excited to represent Madison soon.

For high quality venues along the lines of the Guv, think Chicago. Twin Cities has a growing scene. Madtown and Mke have some underground movements, and defo some really nice one-off type parties. I can tell you more about milwaukee if you care to venture over here . . .

There are a number of Madison bred TA's around, maybe they have some thoughts?
apple country
haha.

he's going from somewhere poppin to somewhere half dead.

You're going to half to invest in some good transportation for your trips to Chicago/Twin Cities.

Lol I am going there for the University though. One of the top ranked universities in the world.
Can't go wrong. An EDM environment would be a bonus though.

Madison is Beautiful City... Welcome to Wisconsin !!!

Chicago is only a two hour ride away... we go there often for shows and events so you won't be too far away from the scene....

There is another TA on here... goes by the name Dreamer... he lives in Madison and he goes to Chicago pretty often as well... he knows pretty much everthing assoicated with EDM events and what not...

I'm sure he'll be on here soon to say hi !!!

Welcome to the Midwest! Trust me, the two-hour commute to Chicago is completely worthwhile (I have one, too, from the other direction- I'm doing my Ph.D. at Purdue). Before moving up here, I lived in Florida, which allegedly has a good EDM scene, but I've found that the scene up in Chicago is way better if you're into techno. Much more chill crowds, lower cover, more relaxed atmosphere.. pretty much the polar opposite of clubs like Mansion :P. Fewer girls running around in bikinis and no WMC, but hey... I'm guessing that Windsor didn't have much of that either :). Check out our events thread to see what's coming up.

EDM events are very rare around here.....unless u are into the whole industrial scene...otherwise, Chicago and Milwaukee at times

Only two hours away? That's awesome. I thought it was 4ish hours away. That's awesome then. I can definitely see myself going to Chicago for EDM events then. Darn, it almost makes me want to not sell my car and have some wheels while in madison.

I live in Madison :nervous: there's an electronic scene, however it's not pretty big. There are a few places with weekly djs - Majestic - Great Dane (every location in town) - Casbah - Cardinal.

What kind of music do you spin? What kind of EDM do you like? What kind of shows you like to go?

For shows, your only option are Chicago and/or the Twin Cities

I spin minimal techno usually. Like up-tempo groove like sven vath. hawtin, beyerish. Sometimes dark dub-step. If I feel like it some good underground electro house.

I prefer almost anything with a good beat to listen. I try to steer to the techno side of things (since i live 10 mins from detroit). But I love Prodigy, chemical brothers, etc. I am also fan of LIVE sets.

I prefer large scale electronic events usually. I have been to alot of nightclubs over the last 4 years. But if its with people who adore the music, anywhere can be fun I suppose.

give it a shoot once u move to Madison - I go to Chicago every time I want to see a "big" DJ, it's only 2 1/2 hrs away which it isnt bad... it sucks if your driving back the same night which I have done several times.

Do you produce your own music?
