Ah, taboos.
Death kind of looms over everybody all of the time, we're kind of lucky to be so blissfully unaware of it. The veil of life teaches us that we exist; that we are here and continuous - the sexual imperative suggests far different, however, and it is our momentary fascination with the thrill of being a discontinuous being that urges people to seek violence and death just as they seek sex and life.
These videos are taboo - that ancient stigma of awe before something we suppose to offend God or country. As with any taboo, there shall always be a following of witnesses and despots enthralled by the thrill of violation; of crime, in part, enabled by the ensurance of cultural recognition. It's sort of a contradictory dynamic, that violence's typical mask of blaring silence should in fact be committed at the behest of a socio-sexual imperative to communicate with others and to collectively react at the experience, but we live in a time of instant gratification and photon comforts; the traditions of burial respect, I believe, are being phased out at a rate congruent to to the acceleration of ballistic weaponry and CCTV atrocty. Individual life simply isn't important - perhaps it never truly was and romanticism is merely a way to convince people that war is right, to the profit of others.
But there is something interesting about the eyes. Perhaps seeing is our most pervasive fetish - a damnable boon of sensation we are hesitant to use in the face of oddity. It's why people who die on camera shall live forever and it's why you close your eyes while having sex. |
