Breaks is EDM. This track is EDM. The difference between this and the trance you've been listening to, is that this is not EDM.

That's a very good tune but it is not breaks. It's somewhere between ambient and IDM. It's also kind of a rip-off of the material on BT's This Binary Universe, although it's a pretty good execution nevertheless.

Breaks would be this, or this, or perhaps this.

And then on the progressive breaks side you have tunes like this, this, and this.

Obviously it's impossible to cover the entire breadth of the genre with a handful of examples, and it's impossible to find a lot of the really good tracks being shared on YouTube, but as I'm sure you can tell, none of these are even close to the track you just posted in terms of style, rhythm, or even tempo.

Real Music? Imo there's no such thing as real music. EDM is just as much music as rock, pop, classical and whatever. Even a rhytmic white noise can be called music.

The argument that "real" music needs to have "real instruments" is just stupid I think. It really bothers me when people say that just because something might have been created entirely with a computer with mouse and keyboard it's not "real" music - Of course it is! It's all about the rhytms, chords, melodies and emotions, regardless of how it was made.

Sure, a guitarist for example, might be skilled with playing the guitar and been practising for years. But for an EDM-producer, the computer is the "guitar" in this case, taking years and years of practise and harvesting skills in many aspects to achive a good standard.

Sure, EDM is usually not as advanced as Classical music. But both is still real music. But to say that rock and pop is more "real" than EDM is ridicilous. EDM tends to be far more original and "groundsbreaking" arrangement-wise than most commersial rock- and pop songs which all usually follows the textbook-standard-arrangements.

I don't claim that EDM is the most advanced style music-wize, but it still deservers as much musical recognision as if you were a pop-artist.

That's my thoughts on the subject anyways. :)

It reminded me more of Gantz Graf actually... Then I realised its actually on hybrids soundsystem 01, which might explain where he got the breaks thing from...

Either way, someone needs to spend more time in music discussion IMO.
