Yeah, that's a great idea! And I think that a month to put it together is more than enough, since all we really have to do is sort through our collections and pick our favorites.

This would actually be even more interesting if it was completely unmixed as a rule. That way the participant would be free to put absolutely anything on there that speaks to them - in the compilation mixtape spirit of High Fidelity.

I feel like framing it as a "mix" - especially in this sub-forum - would lead a lot of people to place parameters on what they choose in order to deliver it in a mixed format.

I kind of like Lebez's idea, but I sort of feel that this has also in its interest to showcase the participants as DJ's and not mere listeners thus leaving the result as a collection within the presenter's limitations or lack of for that matter.

But if it's unmixed it will discourage people from using longer 12" mixes that would eat up several minutes with intros and outros. Anyone is free to do the simplest of quick cuts or crossfader slams if they don't want to mix at all, but the option is there.

I'm not convinced by the "two mixes a month" idea, largely because I'm a lazy bastard and I don't want to spend lots of time PMing people and chasing things up. I appreciate that everyone wants to have a go, but I also don't want to cheapen the sharing of special tracks by swamping the forum with mixes.

Guys I think it's obviously not possible to share unmixed collections as that would put us firmly in illegal territory.

i'm not entering but i've done a number of mixtape-y like mixes, mostly personal ones but what i do with those is that i arrange in audacity or audition/cool edit. you put together your mix there and then output your mix as one big file. i arrange because most of the times i'm using tracks at completely different tempos which is what is going to be done here it's easier.

Simple, make any public shared versions of the mixes at 96kbps. If people want to swap PMs with links to the full quality mp3s, then that's their business and outside of the scope of the game. ;)

That would be a poor decision for at least two reasons. Firstly, who would want to listen to such a low quality file? Secondly, who's going to host all these high quality versions? I have the hosting and would be happy to host mixes, but I'm not hosting two copies of every file under the pretext of legality.

So far, the only argument for unmixed sets is the assumption it will make some people play in a different way, which is in no way proven and doesn't convince me. Allowing people the option of whether they mix properly or just do quick cuts/fades is a far better option as far as I'm concerned.

the selections process would probably take too long. that's why it took a year to do those dubexperience mixes. the personal mixes i do is sometimes sloppy but i'm reluctant to give off anything substandard if someone else is going to hear it

Yeah I figured it was a idea after pressing "reply". :p

Shame, because I'd definitely have invited you. You could start drawing up your list now and I'll hold off inviting you for a while if you're going to need time.
montana
ok, i'm game then.
