Not all of us have attention spans the size of a gnat's, either. If you'd read more than a few words of my "novel", which evidently you did not, you'd realize that this has almost nothing to do with the point I was making.

I was referring to your point that if you add up all the time people spend over the course of the day adds up to more than a break - which I don't think is necessarily true. If everyone typed as much as you did, sure, but a few smaller comments here and there/surfing around a few times/day might not.

And once again, you completely missed my point. It's not the time spent writing posts that's the issue. It's the time spent reading them but more importantly the time it takes to get back to productive work afterward. Even if you've only spent, cumulatively, 20 minutes of your day on TA, if it's spread out over 10 separate visits then you may have lost an hour of productivity.

If you set aside 10 or 15 minutes, once or twice a day, to catch up on TA or current events or whatever else - fine, that's a break, it's the same as any other break. If you're checking TA every 15 minutes but you think it's OK because you only spend 1 minute each time, you are costing your company money.

I'm not perfect either, we all waste company time on personal things sometimes in some fashion. If a company took disciplinary action every time this happened, there wouldn't be anyone left after a few months. But what I can't forgive is when people won't own up to it, when they say that what they do is really OK because they're great at multitasking and are still just as productive as somebody else who isn't goofing off. Oh really? Would you say that to your boss's face?

I'm not going to argue about this anymore. This is a classic case of people ignoring reams of objective evidence because subjective observations, introspection and wishful thinking are more convenient.

And if you didn't write novels it wouldn't take nearly as long to read.

It's no wonder I missed his point entirely - I had to get back to work.

If reading or writing less than 100 words is something you see as requiring a high degree of intelligence, then I think that says more about you than anybody else.

Anybody remember the days when we had these things called "books" and people actually read them, word for word, page for page, no skimming, often for minutes or hours at a time?

As Mark calls it... the ADD generation. Heaven forbid any of you should have to grapple with concepts like paragraphs and sentence structure, or focus on a discussion for more than four seconds at a time. I'm not a writer, I'm not even an intellectual, I'm Joe Bauer from Idiocracy.
