Actually, I think it may be more of the obnoxious culture that's built around hybrids than the designs of the cars themselves.
Then again, I'm San Francisco, so I suspect I get a greater dose of it than many others. |
No, we get a massive dose of it here in OC too. Lots of obnoxious people think they are the ing god of cars. Little to do they realize how uninformed they really are. |

I actually rather like Jay Leno's take on them, which I came across when he was featured on Top Gear last year:
| quote: | James May: “You know how the Toyota Prius is sort of like the _____ of Hollywood. It’s a fashion statement.”
Jay Leno: “But, you know why. You see, because it has the moral superiority. With the Prius, you can go ‘look, I am driving an unattractive car because I am saving the planet.’ See, in America we’re like, ‘Everyone should know about the good work we’re doing anonymously.’” |

Would you prefer that they were driving Hummers or F-150s like the 17sss? Or is it just the self-righteous attitude that irritates?
Personally, I would rather the bunch of self-satisfied wankers in reasonable sized cars. |

Not only is it their smug attitude, but the fact that they think they are helping just because they took this step, yet no other steps were taken to help. Like increasing funding for public transit and actually using public transit. |

:D If a Prius driver get behind the wheel of one for a month, they'd never go back. |

They wouldn't last a week. Their gas bill for 3 days would be higher than their gas bill for 2 weeks. :p |

1000 people and no demand. People need to really ing get a clue.
Until now, getting people to buy electric cars was like asking the hot chicks to date the retard. It just doesn't happen. People weren't, and in many ways still aren't, willing to give up their SUV or their gas engines. In the US anyways. |

While I am not a fan of them in general, does anyone here think they are going about it in the totally wrong way? I believe the manner in which they are doing it to be quite inefficient. With all locomotives that are diesel-electric hybrids, the diesel motor does nothing with the actual work to move the train. That is all done via the electric motors. The diesel engine is strictly for electricity generation.
Now, I don't know how efficient it actually would be on such a small scale. Anyone else see things that I may not be in my quickly thrown together thoughts? |
Trains do not start and stop like cars do, so the engine can operate a little differently.
I am all for teh Prius and any hybrid any car company makes. It creates a demand, which puts spending on R&D for these cars which will make them better. Baby Steps! |

They do start and stop. I took the train every day for a year, and they start and stop just like cars do. They have no traffic though for the most part, so that isn't an issue. |
