I agree with the first part. Markus used to be really good at having prog and trance meet, very dreamy and well versed. Now he is not even trance anymore, he is pure prog.

The half assed attempts and butchering stuff. A lot of the time it's when they combine elements of other genres but isn't limited to this, there are ty attempts with music from single genres all the time...

Sure what sounds good to me sounds good to me but like all art there is SOME objectivity yes? There are standards somewhat.
As for what I was trying to say w the second statement, my feeling is that it's all about 2 things, production value + dj capabiltity in terms of creating FLOW in a set.
What irks me about production value with trance in the past few years is that it's become so cookie cutter a monkey on a midi keyboard and some synths can create better BS. The recent big name djs (shall remain nameless) have become slack and give NO effort to produce quality like they have in the past in the same quantity that they have previously. They create generic crap that is just so bad...they use melodies that don't have the same meaning to me as they have had in the past, they're not catchy at all, I don't get the same feeling as I had previously.
What's even worse is when the use elements in other genres in the worst way...using those same cookie cutter non emotional elements (Taking parts of a song that have elements of another genre and combine with trance for example and expect it to be amazing...it DOESN'T work like that...)
As for set flow, dj capability etc, if there is good production and a dj knows how to combine this in what they are doing, it makes me love the music. Danny Howells comes to mind first...there are melodies in his sets...the set also flows amazing from start to finish. As for trance djs, there USED to be that kind of flow and production value combined in the sets/nights out but have since been lost in favour of the cookie cutter BS I mentioned earier...

Here is something positive: ROXY NYC might be re-opening!!!
I know a lot of Torontonians loved the ROXY as a venue, and so do ALL of the NY'ers that I know of!! It might not change "trance" but it has a possibility of bringing back some sort of vibe to the NYC scene, that has been terribly lacking since the closing of Twilo/Arc/Crobar/ROXY.
