Yup, definately agree with Spam. The weed doesn't do anything to your motivation or goals, it just gets you high. If you go into smoking weed motivated, you will continue to be motivated. He just needs to change something in his life, moving back home might be it.

Hell, the ONLY time I ever clean my basement is when I'm stoned. Used to be the same deal with homework when I was in school. I'd have to wait til 1am for my parents to go to sleep before doing homework because, apparently, hardcore christian parents don't like their son smoking weed. Then they'd wonder why I wouldn't go to school til 10:30. .

During depression, the best thing you can probably due for your brain chemistry is to exercise regularly while having a structured regimen of healthy meals. A DukeU study showed that in the long run exercise alone can be more beneficial than antidepressants alone. The problem is getting the depressed the motivation to get in the gym on a regular scheduele.

Do you know what strains he is smoking(indica dom. vs sativa dom.)? Some strains where I have seen great anectodal reviews for depression are Strawberry cough and Northern lights- but I am guessing since he has acknowledged his depression he probably tries whatever bud alleviates his symptoms the best. Still, the best thing is to take a break for a while-if that doesn't work he should seek some kind of chemical intervention as a last resort.

awesome post. exercise is the key. releases a ton of stress, even if you don't realize it. even if he were to get out of the house and walk for a little while. weed and nature go hand in hand.

true about the strains as well, definitely different highs out there. certainly some strains can exacerbate feelings of paranoia and general malaise.

Exercise is just short term though, atleast it was in my case. You feel sort of good while exercising and you distract yourself at the same time. Only thing is once your done exercising, the problem is still there. The best and only real advice that I can give to someone is to change your life in a big way. Thats what saved me and don't forget it takes a while, even after the change.

yea that happened to me in my early 20s. all of a sudden it started having adverse effects on me and i was like this and i quit cold turkey for years. i think it had to do with my situation at the time.

update (if anyone cares)

we cleaned his entire place in 2 days (sat & sun) and yesterday he cooked us dinner at his place and was in a great mood. i think he was proud to be able to have guests over for dinner finally.

i think he is really appreciative of our help and i can tell already he feels better. on sunday before we showed up to continue the cleaning project, he was already on his roof clearing out the gutters and stuff. we were like "Holy " lol i think he needed that to get him back on track with at least keeping his place clean. hopefully it'll lead to him snapping out of his rut.

It's good that you're there to help. A big part of a person's mental and emotional state is their social network/support. Having people around to be supportive and understanding can sometimes be all the motivation a person needs. Plus that whole birds of a feather/positive influences thing.

yea true. he was like, "did you guys just do this so u can start coming to my house all the time?" lol i was like, "and what would be so bad about us wanting to come over all the time?"

he was searching for a reason to see if we had ulterior motives because he is probably confused as to why we would put so much effort into helping him out just because we care about him and like him. he kept saying thank you.
