Counterpoint. It's studied, however with much boundaries. this is bach chorale 101, however i believe the theory of counterpoint helps understand melodic construction. this may or may not lead you to good melodies ;) |

agree on that, theory doesnt really apply to edm. |
Sure it does - music theory applies to ANY and ALL forms of music, since it's really just about describing what is being played/heard. Describing a i-III-VI-VII chord progression in a standard trance song IS fundamentally music theory. That said, by and large, EDM is very simple relative to most classical music and rarely, if ever, requires in-depth knowledge of music theory to describe it or put the concepts into practice. |

I thought all your examples sounded horrendous that i preferred the shortest version. Your "answered" example was demarcated more by chords so RANN had reason to bring them up. And just because you did a theory test doesn't mean your teacher is full of .
The important concept, which although RANN used in a way he probably did not mean is actually resolution. Resolution / complete / END are all similar when in comes to music theory. An answered phrase, is probably one that is resolved because the "question" usually ends on a dominant chord. But really, this is trance, not Bach choral 101. |
Richie I have had enough of your bs on here. If music theory gets mentioned especially by me you (knowing that I am learning) like nothing better than to come into the thread all self rightous and correct me or even just flat out take the piss. Why do you come on my private messages being all nice sending me tracks and things then do this out here.
Resolve was wrong and you know it, his sentence made no sense and my example although poor as my playing abilities are limited does infact demonstrate the point i was trying to make as does the nursery rhyme example. You despite your arrogance do not know more than my tutor his name is simon lesley (google him ) and he is not only a published and cited author on the subject but has a PHD in it too.
I said I sat an exam where they used those terms, an exam that was set by the exam board here in the Uk and I assure you they are the last people to be 'full of '.
Music theory wouldnt be walking on eggshells if s like you didnt come into every thread saying negative things and trying to discourage people that know less than you from even bothering. Do you know that every single basic music theory tutorial i did you came in trying to ruin it? remember some of the other TA's came and wiped the floor with you because you were being a dick.
If I feel that I can contribute with what knowledge I have of music theory to a thread then I will if I am wrong and you have some contructive critism or a friendly correction then feel free but otherwise OFF AND GO BACK INTO YOUR CAVE
I can hear the mutterings now
"no one knows theory better than me.....no....damn sonic_c only i can talk about theory...wah wah ing wah" |

the problem i have with you is that you contribute misinformation. You don't know what you are talking about and you seem to think taking a semester of theory 101 makes you a theory guru. You also sound like a little twat but that isn't my main grippe.
"Question and Answer", are music terms told to children. They aren't theoretical terms and they were probably taught to you because you are a child or you are taking music theory for idiots 127. You use terms that have no usage in the world of theory , then tell people they don't know what they are talking about because the vague terms you use are not interpreted the way you wanted them. You are the one that is self righteous. |

you make me laugh I dont use terms i dont understand nothing in my post was mis-informed and i used question and answer to explain to someone that has previously made it clear has no knowledge of music theory.
I always try to be humble on here I do not like you have an over inflated view on my abilities even in my reply to you i mentioned you know more than me.
My point is you do not use that knowledge to help people you use it to just put others down. you want to know why i try to relay information to others on here? because before I learned I remember how frustrationg it was clicking around in a piano roll for weeks untill stumbling upon something in key.
i am tryin to help, what are your motives? i notice you dont contribute until i do then your only contribution is trying to slate me and hiding behind the fact your a year ahead of me in theory class!
I never said I am a theory guru ever in fact i regularly post thread asking the likes of you and cryo for help! your problem is you dont like anyone talking about theory its some sort of OCD you have. As soon as it comes and some one less informed than you comes on you always take the piss.
Ask yourself why in at least 5-6 theory threads i can remember you always get into an arguement?
your not a contributer your a piss taker and a bully you! |

perhaps you attempted to make some arguments but it was sandwiched between such pathetic prose that I couldn't disseminate what they were. Perhaps when you are done being a little baby, you could ask the questions in a more coherent manner and you will get a very clear answer. |

Ok....
why when you know that I am keenly trying to learn theory and only dare to venture a response or advice on basic aspects that I have learned. Do you rather than help or just stay away feel it necesary to ridicule me not once but most times I have ever tried to post about theory?
Seen as it is you that critisizes every music theory post I and others make and always disagrees with most people that mention it do you accuse me of thinking i am a theory guru? Is it not you that thinks your a guru?
Why do you claim to know my teacher is full of without knowing who he is?
Where did I contribute misinformation?
Why do you insist on repeating that i am studying theory 101 for kids when I am infact doing an honours degree in compositioon and theory study coupled with grade 5 study (teaching grade in the UK) in addition to my degree?
I have more but maybe you can answer those first.

LOL THREAD DELIVERS THE LOLZ.
Also I just think its funny how this guy (RichieV) talks so much yet he has nothing to show for what he's talking about. He just posts all up on this board like hes an all-knowing music guru and seemingly has and attitude of "if you dont think i'm right, you're stupid and have bad taste." |
