That's actually one of the most annoying things in any Sci-fi really. Aliens who never knew that Earth even existed and yet they speak perfect English :whip: |

What's wrong with subtitles and learning to speak their language? Ok we don't need to actually see them learning it but at least give me some backstory, some sort of lore. |

ive always felt you lose meaning with subtitles, but if its a made-up language i suppose it wouldn't hurt.
B5 did enough back story re language. some of the races had built-in translators.
but, since all our fave shows are made by americans, i cut the writers some slack. just like our world, everyone in the galaxy will end up speaking english!! :p |

Just watched a bit of it. My prediction is that it's more serialised as someone has just suggested.
It's a bunch of mostly flawed characters stuck in the middle of nowhere on a malfunctioning ship that they do't really know/understand.There have already been indications of suspect motives and general dodginess going on internally so there's probably going to be an ongoing element of paranoia, mistrust and internal politics.
So the idea of good humans vs evil aliens will have to go out the window. Also there is no safe home to come back to after each "mission". To make this formula work I suspect they'll have to toss out the idea of aliens that speak English, look like humans or are easy to relate to or understand. I think so far it shows promise. |
I bet it takes at least half the first season to introduce the antagonist. |

I don't think there will be a clear recurring alien antagonist. I think alien races and other obstacles will be a catalyst to the drama.. instigating internal conflicts among the crew. Dr Rush is clearly an ambiguous character, very shifty and manipulative.. I'm guessing he'll be an antagonist in some arcs. That black marine is clearly unstable so he's probably going to lose it at times and do some bad stuff. The Asian chick is clearly very power hungry so she's got potential for sketchy behaviour. |

The Asian chick is from previous Stargates so we pretty much know what she's like actually. |

Yeah she's been around as part of the IOA board for a while. Like she's been the chinese delegate since it's inception. I disagree though they will eventually introduce a primary antagonistic force. Whether it's some over-arching more sinister race than the wraith that the ancients were in direct conflict with, I don't know. But I do know that whenever we go through the gate, we stir the pot, so I'm sure there is some nasty race out in the older places of our universe.
I also noted that about Dr. Rush that was my initial impression when everyone was gating through in the first scene, but it may just be ambivalence on his part. I think that still remains to be seen. |

"We" as in humanity or more specifically the united states in the fictional stargate universe.
