New York City (pg. 3)

the public transportation in japan is ridiculously nice and easy, believe it or not.

i said NYC is awesome, but i wasn't talking about the PT. i was a little confused by the PT there, but then again, i'm not used to that because i drive everywhere.

Re public transport I must be spoiled, coming from Vienna. There the stations are cleaner than hospitals and the trains come always precisely on time, although there are no subways between 1 and 5, unfortunately. The people are indeed friendly, I didn't know if that was necessarily a New Yorker characteristic or something typical American. Overall I'm having a great time, mind you. I must have come with way too unrealistic expectations. After all it's just another (although immensely diverse) big city, not the 'paradise' I (for unclear reasons) had in mind.

Oh, and the Apple store - pure insanity.

Dude dig online for some ACTUALLY fun stuff away from all the tourist ish. There is no way the city is overrated, you're just not looking hard enough.

It's retardedly basic. You can't tell because that map has no scale, but to drive from Hurstbridge to Lilydale would be about 45 minutes.

There are massive sections of the city not covered by train, and the trams and buses are inadequate, slow and infrequent. If you're at the end of one train line it's nigh on impossible to get to the end of an adjacent line on public transport.

and i thought i was the only person lost when reading those useless maps and trying to work out how much i should pay for my fare. in the end i pay nothing. i love the free public transport you guys have going! :tongue2

Well, true that about being smelly and dirty. Public Transport is quite a mess/very underdeveloped. For every fantastic restaurant you get 5 crapp ones - the trial/error ratio is really annoying. Not too many great EDM clubs. I think it's just a general theme of this city: Things are either ridiculously good, tasty, fancy, entertaining or bad and overpriced.

do a little research and you wouldn't have that problem. there are tons of guides for NY (Zagat, NTF, Time Out NY) with extensive details and reviews of all the local restaurants.

as for EDM, i am so completely in love with the fact that i can see all my favorite DJs in NY and i never have to step foot in a club.

if you expect to have the city handed to you on a silver platter without doing any work then you're going to get the tourists version of it. there's so much to explore and it takes effort to find it all... but when you do it is so worth it.

You must be retarded. Melbourne's train system is one the easiest in the world to navigate. I was only saying that it is .

I got the Zagat iPhone App, should make things easier. I did go to some fantastic restaurants, there aren't too many really good ones in my area though (Northern UWS).

It's true about the research, but a bit tough when you're covered with work during the week and have only the weekend to go out and actually explore. As for EDM scene, I seem to be clueless, cause other than the ZOO Festival and some events at Webster Hall/Pacha I haven't discovered too many events. Regular clubs are really problematic if you go as a group. Either insanely expensive (that is, if you do the table thing) or a sheer lottery (even when making sure you're adhering to the required boy/girl ratio).

well for events it depends what you're into. trance is mostly going to be at clubs, but if you're cool with house and techno you can find some really amazing warehouse/loft parties in Brooklyn which tend to be a lot more affordable and way more laid back... if you're okay with venturing outside Manhattan.

are you just visiting or are you staying here for a while?
