Making a decent trance beat
View this Thread in Original format
DJ HARN
Hi folks, I'm totally new to producing and I need some help. I'm using FL studio 8. I've been trying to make some trance beats at about 138-140bpm, trying to make some progressive trance. I have a kick drum with a clappy type sound on every other beat, and a hi-hat sound somewhere in the middle of every beat. The sound is not powerful enough and sounds really poor. When the basslines kick back in on the melody they hardly even penetrate through. It sounds so flat and dull. How do I go about improving. I really need help because I don't know what to do next. Thanks.

Post a sample. ;)

use quality samples!
kick should be the loudest element in the mix.
use equalizer.
cut everything excep the bassline & kick below 200hz.
compression can also help, but i think this will be enough for now :)

Sidechain, bro. It's the secret to trants sukcess.

It's actually pretty common classic mixing advice, because once you put compression on the 2bus it creates an almost sidechain/suction around the bassdrum.

I was wondering the same thing. Off the top of my head I can't think of an instrument that would be consistently louder than the kick.

Log out,get some reference tracks, cut 1 bar or 2,analyze the level and frequency of each instrument/sound,now slow down the tempo to
100 bpm if you're having problem with sequencing,a good sample cd still needed!
now log in after a couple of month and ask about sidchain!
Cheers!
