If we're doing an actual remix like Lily Allen, or most recently Owl City Dave and I will trade parts back and forth between Pro Tools HD and Logic 8. When we mix we mix through a Neve 5462 sidecar that I restored. There are pictures on our website in the media section. I use a combination of EQs on the console and plugin EQ and compression, mostly the Waves SSL, Neve and API bundles and Sonnox stuff. I hit the buss on the neve hard as it's got 40 db of headroom (beats digital's 0 db of headroom) and the entire mix goes through a Geoff Tanner compressor usually set to opto, 2/1 fast attack and release and I just tap the GR. The Tanner compressor sounds like a better Neve 33609 to my ears. It's not right for everything but it's very good.
When we mix our originals we mix with Jason Moss in LA on an SSL 9000 K. In those cases we use the EQ and compression on the console almost exclusively. I act as a second engineer and Dave and I produce while Jason mixes. We also use the SSL buss compressor on the entire mix.

That answers everything and then some. I'm always interested in what producers are using to mix their music through, and comparing mixes to see how different equipment setups might impact a mix. So thanks for that. SSL 9k DrOOL. Even the Neve Sidecar creates droool. But of course its all about using it right ; )
What tracks did you guys mix through the Neve recently? |

Actually this is Mikael, other half of D & J. Since we started 10 months ago we've already had 2 of our remixes (Lily Allen and Nadia Ali) hit #1 in the billboard dance charts. Both of our past and present accomplishments as artists, producers, re-mixers and engineers speak for themselves. We are both honored for any success we have, and we couldn't do it without the fans and industry that supports us... I say that with all sincerity and humility. In regards to the creation of music it really doesn't matter what someone might suffer from, Asperger's, bipolar, depression or just a strong dislike for smug little pr*cks that like to talk sh*t while hiding behind the anonymity of a forum. In the end all that really matters is the music and we seem to keep finding people out there that like ours. For those that do like what we're doing this is just the tip of the iceberg. We have original collaborations with Nadia Ali, Jan Burton and Morgan Page, John Debo, Grayarea and others. If you're not feeling what we're doing that's cool, I'd recommend finding some music you do like and posting on those threads rather than disrupting ours with negative comments.

I was talking about the longterm fight. He did get the full might of TA super punch, but seems to still be chugging along with no impact from his demise on TA, a case could be made for him winning the war, even though he lost the early battle. Must have read some Sun Tzu while in the Galapagos Islands. |
