alright thanks heaps for the overwhelming repsonse really appreciat it.

im still learning to spec side of things, so me not sure on the tech side of them, hence why i ask.

but i will have a look at the yamahas indeed and the fostex PM1 mkII's, i can afford to spend around 1000australian if i really wanted to, but because i havent really cracked the shell in terms of production i sorted wanted to refrain from big spends although monitoring is extremely important. and, at the same time i dont want to skimp just because of uncertainity and then later have to sell an invest in a better pair..!

thanks heaps a bucket load for the information :tongue2

any takers,

thanks for the imput again fokes

MR5's - they're not even half the speaker that an HS80 is. I've used them extensively and they really aren't that great and certainly not worth the money when you consider the competition.

You'd be better off getting either HS80's, second hand Mackie HR824's or going less expensive and getting the new and excellent JBL LSR2325p.

and yes, the MR5's are heaps pricey here but, yeah from what i have read some of the mackie range reviews are good, but in the higher end market of ther gear. But, i am seriously considering the yamahas though had a read up on them.

but happy to hear more thoughts.

I have not heard the Fostex monitors, but I do own the HS80m's. I love them. Mixes translate well, which of course, is very important. Another suggestion I could make are the KRK VXT series (the new version). They are in the same price bracket, maybe a bit more, but they sound very "real" as well.

Make sure if you do get new monitors you have the room to put them in :P. My room sucks... standing waves everywhere. In the premium mix spot everything's cool, but if I move one foot back, the bass dissapears. Ahh the physics of sound...

does the spec sheet for monitors advise on the appropriate room size etc? or do you have to work it based on the specs of the monitors?

2 hours left on these fostex -0.5's as well stil at 400australian, so tempting cheaper i know, but eh im confused..!

In Australia we get a crazy good deal on HS80Ms. Compare the local prices to US prices and you will see what I mean - we actually get them cheaper. In contrast, KRKs cost twice as much here as they do in the US. Should be able to grab a pair for about $800, I think.

Damn. I would jump on that then.

I tested the entire KRK range in depth and didn't find any I could honestly say were great speakers. At twice the price it's like half the quality

The HS80's on the other hand were best in their price range, IMO, and at that aus price tag they're amazing.

listen to these guys mate, know their very well.

i would say go the hs80s.. i chose to go krks cause i was poor and impatient.. they're ok, but have never heard anything except outstanding reviews for the yamahas.. plus it's one of the most important pieces of kit you will own, it's worth investing a little more :)

not sure if these are sold yet, but could PM this guy on the ITM buy/sell forum..

thanks heaps Egos yep im set on these two now, cryo has a set as well i noticed. found a place in the US that does them cheap, but postage is a cracker... but shopping about now for some. thanks again bud appreciate it

I'd have to recommend the HS80s as well. You definitely get a good bang for your buck with them. I got a pair last year second hand for AU$650 with $50 shipping, and they're definitely better than anything else that I've tested out in that price range. If you can handle being patient, just keep your eye out for a good deal on them.

If you're looking on ebay , set yourself up with a 'saved search' and they'll email you every day with anything matching your search criteria. Handy if you're waiting for something specific to appear, like this.

Edit: Seriously though, if you're buying monitors, you should get yourself into a local music gear store and test them all out for yourself. Any store worth a pinch of should have a setup where there are 5 or 6 (or more) different monitors set up on a switch-box, so you can compare them.

I just noticed you're in Adelaide. I'm selling my Event TR6s if you're interested. Nothing wrong with them, they've just been sitting in my cupboard unused for the last 12 months. Little time for music these days, so I just use headphones.

I don't thing it's a good idea to buy monitors from the US. You will need to use a step down transformer, as monitor power supplies are rarely universal. I think this has a tendency to cause the speakers to hum and not perform their best, but double check that with someone who knows more.
