ok fokes, hope everyone is well. I am in the market for some new monitors.

i have found a pair of these on ebay here in australia
Fostex PM-0.5 MKII Studio Monitors for around $400 australian which is around $360 US i think (second hand). Im happy to spend around 800 Australian, and i think i can get a decent pair of near fields for that.

I was looking at bx8a's or rokit's, jbl

Any suggestions greatly appreciated indeed. i guess im just looking for someone who can speak on behalf of a brand,

thanks
rulzz
forget fostex

i would go with KRKs hands down as bx8a's do indeed sound more like a hi-fi speaker than a monitor

i do own krk rokits rp-8s (g1) and those are decent entry level speakers but unfortunately mid range is tiny IMO and depending on your room size you really should go for rp6 if room is medium to small
because Rp-8s only start to open up and sound good when speakers are at least 2+ meters away (7-8 feet)

also look into Adam A5's

I'd suggest looking at the Yamaha HS80Ms - not sure about the dollar conversion, but they may be in your price range.

id save more. cheap monitors arent really very usefull (i know cause i have a pair). a normal stereo is almost better.

i dont think any of your advice is right.

why forget fostex?

KRK Rokit range are toys.

It is only your perception or room placement problems that are causing the Rp-8's to not 'open up' unless 2meters away.

ADAM monitors are pointless unless you are at their top of the line models. The integration of the ribbon tweeter is far from perfect in the lower models. and a ribbon tweeter also gives a false impression of your mix because you track will 90% of the time be listened to on speakers without ribbon tweeters.

so... what are you trying to recommend to the fellow, moose.?

what are you offering professor for the money person has to spend ?

i know it is easy to all over everyone's opinion just because you might have more experience or knowledge on the matter

of course spending few grand on monitors its nice but not everyone has the luxury or the need to do so in the beginner phase.

Well, in da Moose's defense, I think he is suggesting that Fostex should be reconsidered???

after checking the ebay.com .au site i dont see very much options in terms of preowned gear.

from looking at the specs on the fostex 0.5 model. i see a nice little design. however from the s/n ration figures of the amplifier section it is clear that corners have been cut in this design. amplifier power is also significantly lacking.

a browse of the pdf file also shows a usuable frequency response of 50hz-20khz. this is bull and you can expect something more like a usable frequency response of 80hz-20khz. you will notice the product range all share the same usable response which suggests to me that no real measurements have been taken. the +/-2db figure is also somthing i would take with a pinch of salt.

looking at the bigger brother PM1 mkII. this has some more realistic specs. and an amplifier section that is more likely to do the business (notice they have catered more power for the bass driver). s/n ratio is also much better and would suggest a better more expensive amplifer design will have been employed.

the pm1 is $699au but is more likely to be able to be resold when you grow out of them. the smallest model (PM0.5 MKII) of the range will be harder to resell i would assume.

i would go for the fostex nx6 monitors out of all the ebay options near your price range. the specs appear the most realistic and at this level you have less marketing bull to deal with than with their lower models. fostex are pretty much at the forefront of the driver design industry and their bass unit used in the nx6 is very sophisticated. maybe also look at the dynaudios if you can find them preowned in your range.

In Australia we get a crazy good deal on HS80Ms. Compare the local prices to US prices and you will see what I mean - we actually get them cheaper. In contrast, KRKs cost twice as much here as they do in the US. Should be able to grab a pair for about $800, I think.

Damn. I would jump on that then.

I tested the entire KRK range in depth and didn't find any I could honestly say were great speakers. At twice the price it's like half the quality

The HS80's on the other hand were best in their price range, IMO, and at that aus price tag they're amazing.
