so sexy dude. here's a proper review -
Not sure if the opening vocal sample was necessary going into another vocal tune - especially since you used it some three tracks later, but whatever it's your mix. 'Like It Should Be' is a hot tune, very akin to your productions lately (thinking of that Ghost Trains mix you did)... again... sexy. Steve Bug has impeccable taste, the next tune works so well. Would really like to see all the edits you've done, the two tracks blended really well. The little clap/wood hit... whatever you want to call it... was extended very nicely in the mix. Love the funky guitar on the next track, works really well with the vocals on the breakdown. Got a little garbled around the 12 minute, a lot of things coming in at once, I think there's an imbalance between the vocals and the girl gibbering in... german? at least at the beginning, maybe i got used to it, but it worked much better once it got going - maybe you cut out some things? I dunno.
17-19th minutes really reminded me of a lovebirds set, it had that same vibe going on, pitched down, long groove. nice.
Love that Rough Neck Tanzmann remix, used it myself. you did get away from the earlier deeper groove and this got a little bit techy and dry. absolutely love around 27th minute how the track just comes in and breaks up the monotony with a good vocal too. it's like exactly what i wanted to hear.
that revenge remix is the . my favorite track on the whole mix, and used it really well with whole life. amazing blend into the next track too, with the vocal tool. fantastic and my favorite part of the whole damn thing.
great finisher, a lot of funk and kind of ties the whole thing up.
love what you've done here, bro... i'll need that whole life vox tool plz :p |

yeah, the police vox was an afterthought and the more i listen to it, the less i like it. i was thinking about removing them and re-uploading the mix, but that's too much work (unless people really, really don't like it). the reason i repeated it was.. uhm. you know, i don't really know why i did that. lol

ok, first of all i just want to thank you for taking the time out to really review the mix in-depth. you and tony (darin epsilon) have been so supportive yet critical of my ; it's impossible to put into words how much i appreciate and respect that.
as for the edits- i actually didn't edit a whole lot- well, i edited almost every track, but it was mainly just loops and the sparse rearrangement to fit them in better with the other tracks. the only thing i heavily edited was the key in certain tracks (just to keep everything harmonically sound).
..i agree, the elegia track mashed up with the ilija rudman track does sound a bit.. busy, but i mainly wanted to layer both of the main synth patterns on top of each other (they both have almost the same exact rhythm pattern). as you said, it clears up a bit once the chorus rolls in. in retrospect i should've edited the rudman track a bit more to make it not as messy sounding.
my favorite transitions are between OOFT and JC Freaks. that was actually the basis of my mix- atmosfear-ben westbeech-jc freaks-lovebirds. i was messing around one day and mashed them all together, liked what i heard, and constructed my mix around those transistions :p that atmosfear track makes me want to ing boogie like john travolta in saturday night fever. just like this:
again, thanks for the kind words and the thorough analysis- i'm stoked that you know your well enough to be able to discern what i did with this mix. and yeah, after listening to this set again on the way to work, i've decided that i really dislike the police acapella. totally unnecessary.

tape decks actually. i had to flip the track over to side b to continue the mix.. it's quite a complicated process. :p appreciate you taking the time to check it out. |

yeah, i see the rhythm pattern now. there's just something for a minute or two at the beginning that didn't fit... i think it might be that off-beat sound, like a light pad - it goes away after 12:51 and the mix starts clearing up. there's a similar one that maintains for a bit longer, but it's in a lower key and sparse - so not as noticeable.
just something that struck a chord (no pun intended) with me, is all. i don't think it takes anything away from the mix as a whole. |
