Hey Swamper, someone said this in another thtread....

"First off, can't say that I really like this new setup for the West Coast forum...couldn't find the thread for Tyas @ Circus, so searched for it and located under "past events" only to find out that it has been closed. So, I started this thread for the review..."

In most cases, the reviews are just put on at the end of the thread for the event. Only for HUGE nights do peeps on this board really create new topics to give a review of a night.

I am trying to look for other event threads just throught he main board and they do seem to disappear after the event date...which is a bummer.

Sure we'd like to event threads to stay open if possible!

It kind of upsets the flow of things if events that have since passed still have an active thread.

I'll give you an idea of how it works

Cali Main forum
-Event Forum (owner of the Event thread)
-Past Events

Event threads are in the Event Forum... it only shows up in the Cali listings because it is still an *active event* -- once the event date has passed it moves to the Past Event forum (and is closed).

Now, what I can change is make it so that a past event only gets closed when:

a) there is no reply after 48 hours since the event has passed
b) event has passed, there was a reply after the event, but it's been 48 hours since a subsequent reply

Bas will just have to watch out for people trying to artificially keep their event 'open' to escape this time limit.

I like this idea in general. Only thing is if I attend a Friday event and wanna comment on it after the weekend it's too late (unless somebody else replies during the weekend). I'm actually thinking atm if I should even start a review thread for the event I went to last Friday because very few TAs were there and I know it's not gonna get that many replies. It would've been easier to just reply in the original event thread but it's closed already.

I think that 72 hours would work best after that, if no post or reviews let the code do the work!

Question: would an user be penalized if that user creates a new topic to discuss or post pictures for an event in which the original thread was already closed because of the 72 hour rule? Even if that user is the promoter?
DaveT
1. Yeah, I'd say 72 hours minimum if possible, at least for the first reply. We don't hear anything about some Friday events until the Monday-Tuesday as the WC board is slow over the weekends, especialyl ones with a lot of stuff going on.

2. Some peeps take their time posting pictures on here....sometimes peeps will wait a few weeks and just put up pics from a bunch of events at once and then go to the event threads and post links to its respective galleries? If an event is closed, I think they will be less inclined to make a thread just to show their pics to everyone sinec it's been a little while. At that point, they are kinda being discouraged to post pics...not good for a community.

3. I just noticed tancelover24 kinda brought up my #2 there...I should read the thread more careful.

4. Someone out there hire me. I'm sick of being unemployed! :p

I'll have to think about this a bit... keep in mind that we've had this implemented in the Toronto forum for years now without a problem.

In most cases, it makes more sense to start a separate review thread rather than going through a bunch of pages of event promo in order to find some reviews/pics

Well as the site owner, you should be able to make that decision. I on the other hand would not like duplicate threads being created for something that already exist. Keeps the database smaller and running more efficient, but that is just me..

i think the WEST COAST forum is one of the most civilized, content-relevant and self-regulating message boards i've ever come across considering how active it is.

i don't think i ever really wanted a topic to go away or be closed - it's been an non-issue (once again, at least in the WC). plus i've seen a bunch of follow-ups posted long after an event that were good posts, but not worthy of starting a new thread.

i also think it should be more than 48 hours. at least with SF events, people often don't post until they're done with their full weekend and back at work on monday.

i'm guilty of being slow with posting my pics, and it can take several days or a week for me to post. i also haven't seen a need to start separate threads for them. it's only logical for those links to be posted in the event thread.

I understand it has. And there being territory sub-forums makes things more complicated. You basically have have communities within communities -- ala the Toronto TA community and the west coast TA comunity. And each community kinda builds how things are done on their own, and might not line up with what the other the othery city's community has built themselves in their little area.

Again, the WC board typically doesn't create new threads for event reviews, unless it's a big event. Otherwise, people aren't gonna be inclined to create a thread for an event maybe only a couple people went to. It's how people work. People like to follow more than lead. Just human nature!

This board is DRIVEN by the event threads.

If you ever rebuild the board from scratch, lemme know. I've been a project manager of a couple major (large!) internet communities over the years. I am always full of ideas and think of scenario situations to build rules around. A community I helped rebuild/large/grow is here. Other boards such as Dell's, PlayStation.com, Best Buy, Lenovo/IBM, AT&T, Nintendo, etc are largely built around orgiinal ideas I (and our team) had years back when rebuilding the board in the link I provided when we initially worked with 3rd party community developer (Lithium, but later re-coded the entire thing in-house...though I don't code, I just told them dev what to code hehe).

Though, if it's "if it ain't broke don't fix it" type of mentality with TA...I'm cool with that. Everythign works well how it is anyway!
Swamper
Ok:

-Once the event date has passed the thread will be moved into the Past Events forum

-Past Events will not have the thread closed so event reviews/replies can happen whenever -- if bumping of REALLY OLD events becomes a problem we'll have to revisit this

...and most importantly, Past Events will show up in the main forum amongst the other threads based upon last reply time -- in other words, the same as you're used to.
