Most influential International DJ on local DJ's? (pg. 4)

I personally think it's a LOT tougher to play as a local DJ rather than an international headliner. As a headliner you have a set lined up that you hammer in every city you go to, and very often using the same track list for months and months. They all sound good because they are playing in different cities, to different people with extensive practice using the same mixes. As a local, you're have to play to the same people, at the same clubs, 5/6 times a month, and to do a good job you are forced to bring something different every time. If you can do it right, a lot more skill is involved.

I think theres a fair amount of DJs who play 5-6 sets a week! I don't know how they do it! Unless they are just constantly getting new music. It would be a huge challenge to come up with a unique set that often!

This thread got away from the original question quick.

I'd have to say Mastiksoul was probably a big influence on the Carlo Lio "sound". Obviously Lawler has played a big role and Dubfire too to a lesser extent.

There are a tonne of new local djs who are actively making the rounds and doing a good job of it. This is probably the freshest group we've had in a while. The one thing that does concern me is lack of variety. I find a lot of the new guys while quite enjoyable to listen to, seem to hesitate when it comes to playing outside the box.

It's like they feel if they don't swing for the same side of the fence as the big guns, they might strike out?

It would be nice if DJs would just play what they love. Doesn't necessarily have to be outside the box or cutting edge or whatever, but it should at least sound genuine and sincere...personal. That's when you get truly unique/varied sets.

Jenny I think you sorta hit the point that I was trying to. Outside the box wasn't really the right choice of words.

The real talent is playing what you like and convincing an audience to like it to.

People In Canada love International music

So International DJs play a huge role & they definitly influence peoples msuical tastes

But I also agree with jennypie

music sounds better when its personal coming from your heart

when you do music you ahve to show who you are

most djs here dont know who they are

1 week they play this

1 week that

they should just admit they like it all

it helps when you can relate to more then one kind of music/person

most DJs here dont have a ear for music

they are scared to play music because of the reaction they might get

or

they just dont know what sounds good outside of the genre they listen to/play

A real dj is not scared to play music

Canadian are scared because they are 2 worreid what people will think

Yeah exactly.

All the 'big' DJs play a very similar style. Its not like we have a big prog house DJ, a big techno DJ, a big deep house DJ, etc.

I don't blame them... they are just doing whats best for their 'DJ career'.

I actually somewhat agree with the majority of *****'s points here...

The big mainstream DJs do seem to play what other people want to hear, not necessarily what they like (not saying that I know each DJs personal tastes...). But I guess the club doesn't hire them to go off on their own tangent, but rather to play the type of music people expect to hear at their club.

all the big djs use to be small local djs who took a chance

DJs should trust themsleves & there knowledge of music

dont wait for the big DJs to play something you think is good

Dont wait for a big dj to play something you can play

be yourself & be fearless dont be scared of your audience
