Unlike regular abortion, in which case I'm adamantly against, I really think it's hard to take a firm stance here, because there this question covers way too many possible scenarios.
The main question I'd ask the doctor is whether or not the child would be able to feel, as I value feeling as much as thinking. If the child turns out to be a sentient being left with a poor cognitive system, I wouldn't want to abort it. |

That's right, MJM. I do not qualify simply being alive as quality of life.
Having just finished a health care ethics course, I'm actually very interested in issues like this...and when I get home would be glad to further engage in this conversation. |

I would think an atheist would take this issue more severely then someone inclined to some sort of religion or afterlife. This due to the fact that an atheist recognizes that once this life is over.. thats it.. done finito. At least if you put the child out of its misery, from a religious standpoint, there is an afterlife and a positive conclusion.
I would have to think very hard about this. Keep in mind we pay taxes for healthcare and i would honestly rather spend the money towards someone who is physically challenged and cannot help it, then some welfare bum whos gonna waste his money on crack and alcohol.
I am fully for genetic testing and screening children and abortion before a certain period. But euthanasia should be at the discretion of the one to be euthanized. If i became a quadrepeligate i wouldn't want to be euthanized, i know that for sure. Fully incapacitated with only vision? Perhaps yes but i am not sure.
You hear stories about people slowly recovering from things like this and man they are happy to be alive.
There is only one life. it.. just live it as best you can. |
