though i srsly hope that his new found fame from dj mag poll isn't getting him to change his style |

Unfortunately, he went from being distinct to being fluff and generic as well. Too bad, since his sets were epic to say the least. |
bah :( I haven't downloaded anything by him super recently, so that explains it |

Very few DJ's have resisted that temptation, and none of them have been Trance DJ's. |

too bad about that. him and Adam Sheridan were two youngsters who could have had tremendous impact but got swept away by the vocal trance thing. used to be so excited about their potential in 04 |

Looking at Leon Bolier's year end mix tracklist (below), there is a fair bit of techno in it, but it is not boring techno, and this type of techno has some melody.
The biggest issue with trance was(is) it that it became something that you could play on a piano; how many times did we see Armin in a break down, trying to play along to what ever song was on at the moment. Old trance didn't do that, it was a sound that was warped, and mostly would have been impossible to play on a music instrument, it had to be created in a studio. That's why new trance was more akin to dance/pop, it became accessible, with good and bad consequences.
In comes techno. Good luck playing a techno song on a piano, or any other musical instrument. Get back to that old type of feel, with modern sounds/filters/synths, and modern production quality, and we have our selves a ball game.
Now, I do not produce, so please take what I wrote with a grain of salt, as I have no idea what actually goes into producing a techno song, vs a trance song, I just know what they sound like in the end.
