My guess as to why dance music is more disposable than ever (pg. 2)

and all this time, i thought i was going deaf cuz i wasn't hearing as much of the dynamics in music as years ago. i didn't realize the misuse of compression for loudness was that prevalent.

We should just globally chip in a few bucks each, send it to Trevor Horn and see what he comes up with.

I'd listen to that.:p

Once again I agree with Alan lol.

Anyone can download the latest version of w/e cracked bs is floating around piratebay these days, and anyone can go around pretending they "produce EDM for a living".

I don't think the quality of music has actually changed, I think the ratio of tracks to good tracks has, and it just gives that perception. (well maybe that still technically refers to "quality")
Rather then listen to 10 songs now to find 1 I like, I mave have to hear 25 or 30.. or more. Just more dirt to sift through imo.

You would think though at the same time just because more people seem to be making music, that more natural musicians would be discovered, so its hard for me to buy into the whole notion that music today sucks. I don't beleive it. In all honesty I think someone people get so obsessed with a certain genre, they listen to it SO MUCH, that they make themselves sick of it, and it can have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the music.

Just as a thought.

edit: I don't want to make it sound like I'm an exception because I'm not, I just didn't crack my version of FL =]. But the difference with me is when I produce a track, I am in no way going to try promoting that track. Other people aren't like that, so I do try to seperate myself even though I'm guilty of being part of the "new generation" of producers or w/e you'd call it.

Let the DJ be your guide. Find a favorite DJ and listen to his sets. They'll do the picking for you and then you don't have to go through all the crap music.

I think this is what got the industry in so much . If you listen to ASOT or Tiesto or other "top 20" of EDM, you'll definitely be thinking that having ty vocals with idiotic lyrics and cheesy melody was the way to go. Some time ago these guys were trailblazers but then they realized there's a load of money to be made by making EDM more palatable, leading us to where we are today.

Why do you have to pick the top 20 DJs?

It could be anyone. Theres people who submit mixes on youtube that are pretty fvckn good imo, theres friends I have who mix in clubs right down the road who help me find new tracks. There is a ton of DJs besides Tiesto, and tiesto is one of the last people I'd go to for new tracks.

Just have more faith in people, not everyone is gonna go flock to ASOT for thier music. And again, I think its the change in technology that caused this shift, and I think it would have happened whether or not we had DJs monopolizing the music industry. I could obviously be wrong, but I do think stronger forces are at work, and technology is a much stronger force imo.

+1, musically trance is doing things now that it's never done before if you dig deep enough. You could complain about having to dig, but I defy you to name any other genre that doesn't have its own fair share of garbage that needs picking through itself.

Yes, its like this with most other entertainment as well, music, movies and games also suffers from the same.

compression just cliqued for me. tripping out here. sound can be tricky because you can't "see" it. compression doesn't change anything except the loudness of something, if some lower frequencies aren't as loud as some of the higher ones, a compressor will match them both based on the parameters you set. correct me if i'm wrong. also, i need to become more aware of the attack and release, and all the params really,.
