A few questions for homosexual and bisexual TA's
View this Thread in Original format
Lira
I just finished reading Erich Fromm's egregious book "The Art of Loving", as part of a research on love in general (Robert Solomon's "About Love" is next). One thing I noticed, however, is that most of the academic literature about love (written by philosophers) seems to take heterosexual erotic relationships for granted, and I know very little about homosexual relationships (the little I know either comes from other kinds of media, such as films and television, or from the very few gay friends I have). If anything I say sounds ignorant, that's because I am ignorant on this topic, but I would like to know more :p

So, my questions are:

  1. How polar are homosexual relationships in general? I know there are the so-called "butch and femme" couples, but I remember reading that they're not exactly popular in LGBT circles for being too "heterosexually" oriented. How much homo- is really there in homosexual relationships? Is it anything like a "bromance"?

  2. Do you think there's any striking difference between homosexual relationship and heterosexual ones? As far as I've understood them, and avoiding any possible stereotypes, there's nothing really different about homosexual relationships. Is there?

  3. "There are no homosexuals, just homosexual acts". Do you (dis)agree? Why?

They say when your hand itches, you're gonna be coming in to some money soon. What happens when your ass itches?

I'll take a stab at this.

It differs for every couple really. Some couples are the stereotypical butch/femme while others have no set gender lines. Its not uncommon to have a butch/butch or femme/femme relationship these days, its just less obvious to the heterosexual world. I wouldn't compare it to a bromance at all haha .. Our relationships are just like straight ones -- you never know what combination you'll see.

No, not really... but I would say that homosexuals are more sexual.

I disagree. Though you can commit homosexual acts without being gay there are definitely homosexual people. There is a lifestyle, a community and a set of stereotypes. There are too many of us to just say we're just an act haha.

Hope that helps :)

Someone will be coming in your ass soon... and you might get some money for it.

No different to any heterosexual relationship I've been in, successfully like any relationship there is a case of win-win for both, or very short lived in which case its at a coarse level.

Makes borrowing clothes easier :p
Seriously, not in every case, but there was a substantial amount of emotional involvement to that level of commitment. After your family looks on in horror, workmates, friends don't understand and society considers you at best an aberration of nature, you better be damn sure that you're in it for love. Because there isn't any other benefits, just negatives.

Or six beers and some spirit chasers it could happen to anyone... even you Lira! :stongue:

Haha, no, I'm fine being straight, Lilith... and if I did fancy a guy, I'd have no problem accepting it, it's not like I haven't got used to the fact that I'm already eccentric the way I am :p

Thanks for your input, girls :)
