it's kind of sad that some TV personalities are "staple of Toronto" and "define Toronto"
what exactly did they do for the city, hm? it should be the people of the city defining it, prominent artists, musicians, sportsmen etc etc
not some idiots from the telly
guys common! |
Moses Znaimer IS a cultural icon in Toronto. CityTV has been an institution in Toronto since the late 70s. They took a chance on nobodies and made them into stars. They showcased local talent like no one else. They were the ONLY newscast to report on high school sport events alongside the majors. Part of a trip downtown as a kid was to drop a buck into speakers corner and make an ass out of yourself. In fact CITY TV helped shape Queen West into what it is (and was).
Thats just a portion of "what they did for the city".
Now that Robbers is in charge its all pretty much gone. |

It's just too bad that Rogers didn't allow the creative talent that Moses Znaimer founded to further evolve.

is anyone really surprised though?
Robbers is good at one thing... turning decent institutions into crap and then charging an arm and a leg for it.
CANTEL/AT&T Canada ----> Rogers Mobile
Shaw Cable -----> Rogers Cable
SkyDome --------> Rogers Centre (had the concessions there lately?
Blue Jays ------> Need I say more??
Rogers is a stain on our city and does nothing for its benefit. Where are the Johnny Lombardis, Honest Eds and Mel Lastmans of our day??
At least these business men knew how to give back to the city!! |

No, they run a very tight ship... I captured some crazy news video.... CityTV didn't want to pay me anything (only employees get paid, squat for freelancers). CFTO paid me a nice check on the spot. |

I wasn't one bit. As soon as I heard that CityTV and MuchMusic/ChumRadio had been bought out by Rogers and CTVglobemedia respectively, I feared the worst for those guys.

my sentiments exactly
never watched any of that plus I never watched news on ANY channel
I just catch my shows and watch discovery channel on the weekends sometimes |
I think the thing is that we all grew up with this station the way it was and it was a HUGE part of Toronto life... |

Why am I not surprised?
Just another step in Toronto becoming more Americanized, and every facet and part of the city being run by faceless corporations who only value profit.
Move along everyone, nothing unusual to see here.
As for anyone who says "who cares" or "it doesn't affect me", high-five for adding to Toronto's culture of zero responsibility and zero accountability. The corporations definitely don't care about the city, so although it might not affect you personally, if YOU as a resident of Toronto don't care what happens within the city then what's left is NOBODY CARES about Toronto, or solving it's problems, or improving the city. |
