The problem with these sorts of things is one could re-do a set a million times and get it perfect (for submission) but would have difficulty doing the same thing uninterrupted live.
Criteria for judging would be the usual... track selection/programming, mixing, originality, etc. In the years I was a partner with WEMF, a 3-day electronic music festival - I handled the 'New Talent' DJ stage and I got a load of CDs mailed to me with mixes from all over (DnB, House, Trance, Techno, Breaks, etc.) and I had to pick the best ones and structure their time slots according to what style worked with what.
Now, whether I put the vote up to TAs, at the beginning (when all submissions are coming in) or at the end (after I've gone through them and picked out what I consider to be the best) is still undecided. Above all else, if I did go in that direction, I wouldn't want it to turn into a popularity contest for votes but rather to have the music speak for itself. |
Obviously anytime you have a contest there is the possibility of people cheating but if you think about it; how many djs are going to be ok with getting their time in the spotlight only to be laughed at by their peers and the fans. There's a time when reality has to set in and I seriously doubt that anyone who would win a contest from here (which is to my knowledge like the 2nd or 3rd biggest trance forum on the net) would not be able to rock the out of the crowd.
The best way to do this is for you to narrow down to a pre-determinded contingent of mixes and then make them anonymous and hold a public poll. This contest is a reflection on you so ultimately you should have say on who your contestants are.
Where will this festival be taking place? I know you said you can't reveal much at the moment but how about a continent. Will the dj's accomodation's be paid or unpaid? When are you going to post the contest? I'm definitely interested! |

#1 anything less than 10 years old is not allowed. |
I like your style.
And each of the tracks used must be the vinyl pressing and not the cheating beatport digi re release. Sort out the men from the boys. |

| Why not make a contest for us TA producers? Winner track gets played at the festival by the DJ who wins :eyes: |

Just don't put a lot of stock in the mixing aspect. I know that sounds stupid because that is what DJ'ing is, but you're absolutely right in that people would just record it until they think its flawless. Focus on programming, track selection, flow, originality, overall appeal. |

This would be my concern, should it go to a public vote. |

When the stakes are high it brings out the worst in people. Avoiding a popularity contest inherently means no public voting. |
